Richard Hell

Blank Generation

by Richard Hell
Richard Hell

Biography:

Richard Hell (born Richard Meyers; October 2, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky) is an American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist, and writer.

Hell was an originator of the punk fashion look, the first to spike his hair and wear torn, cut and drawn-on shirts, often held together with safety pins. Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, has said Hell was an important inspiration for the Sex Pistols' look and attitude, as well as the safety-pin accessorized clothing McLaren sold in his London shop, Sex.

Subject: TAB: Blank Generation by Richard Hell

This song is very very similar to the Stray Cats' "Stray Cat Strut" in
pacing and feel, though this is played with a distortion guitar. The
lyric pacing is weird--if you have the album, you might want to listen
to it a few times before you attempt to sing it.

There is an intro which is lead; I don't play lead, and I couldn't even
figure out the chords. If anybody knows them, let me know. The main part
of the song seems to be power strummed chords. Anyway, here it is...

Richard Hell and the Voidoids--Blank Generation

I was sayin' let me out of here
Em D C B

Before I was even born
Em D

It's such a gamble when you get a face
C B

It's fascinatin' to observe what the mirror does
Em D C B

But when I die it's to the wall that I set my face
Em D C B

Chorus: I belong to the blank generation, and
Em D C B

I can take it or leave it each time, well
Em D C B

I belong to the ----- generation
Em D C B

I can take it or leave it each time
Em B7 Em Em

Oooo oooo oooo oooo(same notes as chords)
Em D C B

Triangles falling at the window as the doctor cursed
Em D C B

He was a cartoon, long forsaken by the public eye
Em D C B

The nurse adjusted her garters as I breathed my first
Em D C B

The doctor grabbed my throat and said, "God's consolation prize!"
Em D C B

CHORUS

Oooo oooo oooo oooo(same notes as chords)
Em D C B

(repeat)

To hold the TV to my lips, the air so packed with cash
Em D C B

Then carry it up flights of stairs and drop it in your vacant--lot
Em D C B

Then lose my train of thought and fall into your arms' tracks
Em D C B

And hold beneath my eyelids every passing thought
Em D C B

CHORUS

CHORUS (quietly)

Oooo oooo oooo oooo
Em D C B

Oooo oooo oooo oooo
Em D C B

Waah oooooooo
B7 Em (pick strings)
