I am just a poor boy
Am
Though my story's seldom told
G
I have squandered my resistance
F
For a pocket full of mumbles
C
Such are promises
Am
All lies and jests
G F
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
C C C C
And disregards the rest

C
When I left my home and my family
Am
I was no more than a boy
G
In the company of strangers
F
In the quiet of the railway station
C
Running scared
Am G F
Laying low seeking out the poorer quarters
C
Where the ragged people go
G
Looking for the places
F C
Only they would know

Am G
Lie la lie lie la la la lie lie
Am F G C C C C
Lie la lie lie la la la la lie la la lie

C
Asking only workman's wages
Am
I come looking for a job
G
But I get no offers
F C
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
Am G F
I do declare there were times when I was so lonesome
C C C C
I took some comfort there

C
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
Am G
And wishing I was gone going home
F
Where the New York City winters
C
Aren't bleeding me
Am
Leading me
G
Going home

C C C Am G G G
La la la la
C C C Am G G G
La la la la
F C C C C
La la la la

C
In the clearing stands a boxer
Am
And a fighter by his trade
G
And he carries the reminder
F
Of every glove that laid him down
C
Or cut him till he cried out
Am
In his anger and his shame
G F
I am leaving I am leaving
C C C C
But the fighter still remains

Am G
Lie la lie lie la la la lie lie
Am F G
Lie la lie lie la la la la lie la la lie
Am G
Lie la lie lie la la la lie lie
Am F G
Lie la lie lie la la la la lie la la lie
Am G
Lie la lie lie la la la lie lie
Am F G C
Lie la lie lie la la la la lie la la lie
