Peter, Paul and Mary

Biography:

One of the best of the Folk era groups...They were liberal leftist in message, however the music was universal. They had many hit records and continued to tour for many years into the modern era. The recent death of Mary has ended the group, but their music will remain as their legacy.

A traditional Irish ballad as performed by Peter, Paul, & Mary (1965)

Capo 1

[Intro]
C Am F G

[Verse 1]
C Am
As I was a goin' over Gilgarra Mountain,
F C
I spied Colonel Farrell and his money he was countin'.
C Am
First I drew me pistols, and then I drew me rapier, sayin'
F C
"Stand and deliver for I am your bold deceiver."

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.

[Verse 2]
C Am
He counted out his money and it made a pretty penny.
F C
I put in me pocket to take home to darlin' Jenny.
C Am
She sighed and swore she loved me and never would deceive me,
F C
But the devil take the women for they always lie so easy.

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.

[Verse 3]
C Am
I went into me chamber all for to take a slumber,
F C
To dream of gold and girls, and o'course it was no wonder-
C Am
Me Jenny took me charges and she filled them up with water,
F C
Called on Colonel Farrell to get ready for the slaughter.

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.

[Verse 4]
C Am
Next mornin' early before I rose to travel,
F C
A' came a band o' footmen and likewise Colonel Farrell.
C Am
I goes to draw me pistol for she'd stole away me rapier,
F C
But a prisoner I was taken- I couldn't shoot the water.

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.

[Verse 5]
C Am
They put me into jail, with the judge all a-writin':
F C
"For robbin' Colonel Farrell on Gilgarra Mountain."
C Am
But they didn't take me fists so I knocked the jailer down,
F C
And bid a farewell to this tight-fisted town.

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.

[Verse 6]
C Am
I'd like to find me brother, the one that's in the army.
F C
I don't know where he's stationed, in Cork or in Killarney.
C Am
Together we'd go roamin' o'er the mountains of Kilkenny,
F C
And I swear he'd treat me fairer than me darlin' sportin' Jenny.

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.

[Verse 7]
C Am
There's some takes delight in the carriages and rollin',
F C
And some takes delight in the hurley or the bollin'.
C Am
But I takes delight in the juice of the barley,
F C
Courtin' pretty maids in the mornin' oh so early.

[Chorus]
G
Mush-a-ring-um duram da,
C
Whack fol the daddy-o,
Am F
Whack fol the daddy-o,
C G C
There's whiskey in the jar.
