Natalie Merchant

Seven Years

by Natalie Merchant
Natalie Merchant

Biography:

Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York) is an American alternative rock singer-songwriter. After rising to fame at the helm of the popular folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant enjoyed even greater success as a solo artist during the mid-'90s. Her literate, socially conscious songs established her among the preeminent women in pop music, while her solo debut -- 1995's Tigerlily -- helped pave the way for a number of female performers in a pre-Lilith Fair market.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

==VERSE==
F C Dm Bb
How did I love you? There was no measuring
F C Dm Bb
Far above this dirty world, far above everything
Bb C Dm
In your tower over it, you were clean

==VERSE==
F C Dm Bb
So warm and insightful were you in my eyes
F C Dm Bb
I was sure the rightful guardian of my life
Bb C Dm
Damn you betrayer, how you lied!

==CHORUS==
Bb
But for seven years
C F C
You were loved, I laid golden orchid crowns around your feet
Bb
And for seven years
C F C
I bowed down to touch the ground so holy; your devotee
Bb Db Dm
You were, you were all that I could see

==VERSE==
F C Dm Bb
I've got my sight now, I see everything you hid
F C Dm Bb
So don't you try to right now all the wrong you did
Bb C Dm
I might forget you, but not forgive

==CHORUS==
Bb
But for seven years
C F C
You were loved, I laid golden orchid crowns around your feet
Bb
And for seven years
C F C
I bowed down to touch the ground so holy; your devotee
Bb C
And for seven years, you were so revered
F C
I made offerings of anything and everything I had
Bb Db Dm
You were, you were all that I could see

==OUTRO==
Bb Db Dm
You were, you were all that I could see (repeat x4)
