Natalie Merchant

Put The Law On You

by Natalie Merchant
Natalie Merchant

Biography:

Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York) is an American alternative rock singer-songwriter. After rising to fame at the helm of the popular folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant enjoyed even greater success as a solo artist during the mid-'90s. Her literate, socially conscious songs established her among the preeminent women in pop music, while her solo debut -- 1995's Tigerlily -- helped pave the way for a number of female performers in a pre-Lilith Fair market.

[Verse 1]
Em Am Em Am
Do I have to put the law on you baby for all the wicked things you do?
Em Am
Am I gonna have to put the law on you baby?
C E
That was not what I wanted to do.

[Verse 2]
Em Am
Do I have to put the law on you baby
Em Am Em Am
try to make you come out clean for every evil deed?
C E
You're just about the lowest and the dirtiest thing I've ever seen.

[Chorus]
Fm Am C E
Did you really think you could pull it off, the perfect crime, crime of the heart?
Fm Am C E Am
And did you really think that you'll get away, do the crime and ne-ever pay?

[Verse 3]
Em Am
Do I have to put the law on you baby
Em Am
Lock you up and throw away the key
Em Am
For the countless counts of low down double-cross you've been about?
C E
Have you no ... no decency?

[Chorus]
Did you really think that you could pull it off, the perfect crime, crime of the heart?
Did you really think that you'll get away, escape my justice until you're dying day?

[Instrumental Break]
Em Am Em Am Em Am C E

[Chorus]
Though you made it clear from the very start there was no trusting you in my foolish heart.
Though you maybe made it clear that didn't make it right. [???]
Do you really really think you'll get away? You can't escape my justice 'til my dying day.
