Molly Drake

I Remember

by Molly Drake
Molly Drake

Biography:

Mary Lloyd (1916–1993), also known as Molly, was the mother of Nick Drake. In 1934, she met Rodney Drake, and they were married in 1937. Molly gave birth to Nick in 1948.

She was an accomplished poet and songwriter. Her poetry is somewhat maudlin but beautiful. Her compositions for piano are marked by the same looping style that characterized her son Nick's guitar work. Her daughter Gabrielle asserts that her mother's work is unquestionably a strong influence on Nick's work.

I Remember - Molly Drake

[Intro]
G A G Bm A

[Verse 1]
A D Bm G D A
We tramped the open moorland in the rainy April weather
D Bm G D A
And came upon the little inn that we had found together
Em D#m D Em A
The landlord gave us toast and tea and stopped to share a joke
D G
And I remember firelight
Em F#m
I remember firelight
D F#m Bm
I remember firelight
F#m Em G A
And you remember smoke

[Verse 2]
D Bm G D A
We ran about the meadow grass with all the harebells bending
D Bm G D A
And shaking in the summer wind a summer never-ending
Em D#m D Em A
We wandered to the little stream among the river flats
D G
And I remember willow trees
Em F#m
I remember willow trees
D F#m Bm
I remember willow trees
F#m Em G A
And you remember gnats

[Verse 3]
D Bm G D A
We strolled the Spanish marketplace at 90 in the shade
D Bm G D A
With all the fruit and vegetables so temptingly arrayed
Em D#m D Em A
And we can share a memory as every lover must
D G
And I remember oranges
Em F#m
I remember oranges
D F#m Bm
I remember oranges
F#m Em G A
And you remember dust

[Verse 4]
D Bm G D A
The autumn leaves are tumbling down and winter's almost here
D Bm G D A
But through the spring and summertime we laughed away the year
Em D#m D Em A
And now we can be grateful for the gift of memory
D G
For I remember having fun
Em F#m
Two happy hearts that beat as one
D F#m Bm
When I had thought that we were "we"
F#m Em G A
But we were "you and me".
