[verse 1]

Bm D
Few of the sins of the father are visited upon the son,
A/E A/E E
Hearts have been hard, hands have been clenched into fists too long.
Bm D
Our sons need never be soldiers, our daughters will never need guns,
A/E A/E E
These are the years between, these are the years that were hard fought and won.
Bm D
Now, contracts torn at the edges, old signatures stained with tears,
A/E A/E
Seasons of war and grace, these should not be forgotten years.
Bm Bm
Still it aches like tetanus, it reeks of politics,
A G F#m Em
How many dreams remain, this is a feeling too strong to contain.

[chorus]

D Bm
The hardest years, the darkest years,
G A
the roaring years, the fallen years.
D Bm A A
These should not be forgotten years.
D Bm
The hardest years, the wildest years,
G F#m
the desperate and divided years
Em Bm A A
These should not be forgotten years.

[verse 2]

Bm Bm

Bm D
Our shoreline was never invaded, our country was never in flames,
A/E A/E
This is the calm we breathe, this is a feeling to strong to contain.
Bm Bm
Still it aches like tetanus, it reeks of politics,
A G F#m Em
Signatures stained with tears. Who can remember? We've got to remember!

[chorus]

D Bm
The hardest years, the darkest years,
G A
the roaring years, the fallen years.
D Bm A A
These should not be forgotten years.
D Bm
The hardest years, the wildest years,
G F#m
the desperate and divided years
Em Bm A A
These should not be forgotten years.
