[Intro]
C D C G

[Verse]
G D G D
Over a ocean and over a sea
G D C D
Beyond these great waters what do I see
G D G D
I see the great mountains rise up from the coastline
G D C D
The hills of Cape Breton, this new home of mine
G D G G7
Oh and we come from the countries all over the world
C G Am D
to hack at the forests and plow the land down
Em D G G7
Fishermen, farmers, and sailors all come
C G D G
to clear for the future this pioneer ground

[Chorus]
G C G D
We are an island, a rock in the stream
G C G D
We are a people as proud as there's been
Em C G D
In soft summer breeze or in wild winter wind
C D C G
The home of our hearts Cape Breton

[Verse]
G D G D
Over the rooftops and over the trees
G D C D
Within these new townships what do I see
G D G D
I see the black pit head, the coal wheels a-turning
G D C D
The smoke stacks a-belching and the blast fires burning
G D G G7
And the sweat on the back is no joy to behold
C G Am D
In the heat of the steel plant or mining the coal
Em D G G7
And the foreign-owned companies force us to fight
C G D G
For our survival and for our rights

[Chorus]
G C G D
We are an island, a rock in the stream
G C G D
We are a people as proud as there's been
Em C G D
In soft summer breeze or in wild winter wind
C D C G
The home of our hearts Cape Breton

[Verse]
G D G D
Over the highway and over the road
G D C D
Over the causeway stories are told
G D G D
They tell of the coming and the going away
G D C D
The cities of America draw me away
G D G G7
And though companies come and companies go
C G Am D
And the ways of the world we may never know
Em D G G7
We'll follow the footsteps of those on their way
C G D G
And we'll fight for the right to leave or to stay

[Chorus]
G C G D
We are an island, a rock in the stream
G C G D
We are a people as proud as there's been
Em C G D
In soft summer breeze or in wild winter wind
C D C G
The home of our hearts Cape Breton
