Michael Martin Murphey

Running Shadow

by Michael Martin Murphey
Michael Martin Murphey

Biography:

Austin Texas in the 1970s saw the rise of a number of artists and Michael Murphey (as he was known then) is one of them. Carolina In The Pines and What's Forever For were chart hits for Michael, but over the years he's proven another song was the most prophetic - he really did just want to be a Cosmic Cowboy and in the later years he's filled the niche of Cowboy singer. Still his voice is a strong instrument and he's a likable performer.

C#m G#m G A E E

[Verse]
C#m G#m A B E
Wise men spoke the vision Of the spirit horses way
C#m G#m G A E
Like a saviour he has a mission From the ashes of the plains
C#m G#m A B E
All the souls of mighty warriors Are carried in his veins
C#m G#m G A E
All the hopes of ancient nations Are flowing through his mane

[Chorus]
A C#m B
And the spirit voices say
C#m G#m A B E
Never chase a running shadow Underneath the midnight sky
C#m G#m G A E
Never chase a running shadow You will ride till you die

[Verse]
C#m G#m A B E
>From the badlands of Dakota One lone rider came
C#m G#m G A E
To catch the restless spirit They said could not be tamed
C#m G#m A B E
And he laughed at all the legends He called their stories lies
C#m G#m G A E
He called it superstition Foolish dreams of fading tries

[Chorus]
A C#m B
And the spirit voices cry
C#m G#m A B E
Never chase a running shadow Underneath the midnight sky
C#m G#m G A E
Never chase a running shadow You will ride till you die

[Instrumental]
C#m G#m G A E

[Verse]
C#m G#m A B E
Over hills and through dark canyons He chased the steel dust grey
C#m G#m G A E
But he could not catch the stallion He could not break his pace
C#m G#m A B E
He persued the racing phantom To the canyons edge
C#m G#m G A E
But running shadow jumped the chasm Left the outlaw on the ledge

[Chorus]
A C#m B
And the spirit voices say
C#m G#m A B E
Never chase a running shadow Underneath the midnight sky
C#m G#m G A E
Never chase a running shadow You will ride till you die

[Bridge]
C#m G#m G A E
Never chase a running shadow You will ride till you die

[Outro]
C#m G#m G A E
