Material Issue

Next Big Thing

by Material Issue
Material Issue

Biography:

Material Issue was a power pop power trio from Chicago, Illinois. Their trademark was a brand of dense, rich, manic, and powerful pop tunes. Their lyrics revolved heavily around themes of love and heartbreak, having a phalanx of girl's-first-name-titled songs. Singles such as "Diane" and "Valerie Loves Me" remain staples of rock radio. Formed in 1985, Material Issue was the brainchild of frontman Jim Ellison (who also played guitar, provided lead vocals, and wrote all Material Issue songs).

G D Em D
I met her at a bar where I often sit down
G D Em D
And have myself a drink
C Am
She played my favorite song
G D
Before I had time to think
G D Em D
So I bought her a round and she pounded it down
G D Em D
And let out a laugh like a freight train
C Am
We exchanged small talk
G D
Doesn't it feel like rain?
And she said..

[Chorus]
C D
You and I, we're two of a kind
G Em
Not afraid to dream
C
We could be the
D
Next big thing

She was an artist with a two bedroom apartment
G D Em D
Her dad kept her going on a weekly allowance

You and I, we're two of a kind

Not afraid to dream
C
We could be the

Standing at the station and missing the train

You and I, we're two of a kind
G Em
Not afraid to dream

We could be the

Next big thing
