Mary Gauthier

Camelot Motel

by Mary Gauthier
Mary Gauthier

Biography:

Mary Gauthier (born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1962) is an American country and folk singer/songwriter. Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Mary was adopted. At age 15, she ran away from home and stole her parents' car, and spent the next several years in detox, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in jail. These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on (particularly her song "Drag Queens in Limousines").

G C
He's lying on the double bed acting self-assured
D G
In his T-shirt and his underwear he's barely said a word
G C
She pours a cup of coffee lights the day's first cigarette
D G
Picks up the phone and call her kids from the motel kitchenette

G C
There's two guys moving slowly in the room across the hall
D G
Both their heads are pounding from last night's alcohol
G C
They met in a chat room then they took it here
D G
They both go by pseudonyms and soon they'll disappear

F C G
Cheaters, liars, outlaws, and fallen angels
F C G
Come looking for the grace from which they fell
F C G
They hold on to each other in the darkness
Bm F#m G Bm F#m G
Cause the morning light is hell at the Camelot Motel

G C
He met her at the pool hall the guys told him she was touched
D G
Now she's ranting and she's raving about the Devil, Christ and such
G C
He's thinking about the highway and the way she begged last night
D G
He's wishing he had blown this dump before the morning light

F C G
Cheaters, liars, outlaws, and fallen angels
F C G
Come looking for the grace from which they fell
F C G
They hold on to each other in the darkness
Bm F#m G Bm F#m G
Cause the morning light is hell at the Camelot Motel

C G
Lancelot and Guenivere bang their bedpost in my ear
C G
Neon lights the castle walls bug lights in the entry halls
C G
I lie awake with a troubled mind thinking 'bout what I left behind
C G
Me and the royal denizens got damn good reasons for our sins

G C
There's a couple counting money in room 124
D G
They're wrapping 10's and 20's throwing 1's down on the floor

They're strung out and nervous, they jump at every little sound
D G
He keeps picking up his pistol then putting his pistol down

Come looking for the grace from which they fell
