[Verse]
C
We were driving back from the country one night
Am7
Mom and Dad up the front, the rest of us snug and tight
C
My kid brother grumbled for a little minute
Am7
And my big sister said he better quit it or die

[Verse]
F
It had been a long day in the countryside
Dm7
Playing with the cousins on my mother’s side
C
The sound of the radio closed our eyes
G Am7
Drifting across the sea, then I fell asleep

[Verse]
C
Well, I don’t know what woke me up
Am7
Maybe a country song or a big truck passing by
C
I could hear Mama and Papa talk
Am7
Papa said something and Mama began to cry

[Verse]
F
No more words then, just soft sobs
Dm7
And my head began to throb
C
I just lay there playing dog
G Am7 F
Breathing slow and deep, they thought I was asleep
G Am7
They thought I was asleep

[Instrumental]
C Am7 C Am7 F Dm7 C G Am7

[Verse]
C
It seemed like forever till the sobbing stopped
Am7
Then they talked for a little, but just too soft to hear
C
Daddy kept looking to the side of her face
Am7
One hand on the wheel, the other one stroking her hair

[Verse]
F
Headlights shining from the other way
Dm7
Showed tears on the cheeks of Daddy’s face
C
I prayed for Jesus to send his grace
G Am7 F
And all our souls to keep, back then I believed it
G Am7 F
They thought I was asleep
G Am7 F
The night was dark and deep
G Am7 F
I wish I was asleep
G Am7
How I wish I was asleep

[Outro]
F G Am7 F G Am7 F G Am7 x2
