Mark David Manders

Hells Half Acre

by Mark David Manders
Mark David Manders

Biography:

From Mark's bio on his website:

"Mark David Manders has been a mainstay in Texas music for over twenty years. His music reflects his life: an intriguing dichotomy of the introspective soul searcher and the beer swilling, drunken poet. His shows are high energy and unapologetic. His songs reek of alcohol with an occasional hint of guilt. Yet there is a tapestry to his lyrics that reflects influences such as Guy Clark and Kris Kristofferson.

Mark David Manders grew up in Plano, Texas, a suburb just north of Dallas.

[Verse]
C G D Em
I come from Birmingham, by way of Lousianne,
C G Em D
into this no man's land where life and death are intertwined.
C G D Em
Me and my brother Les, heard about this land out west,
C G D Em
So we put our horses to the test, to see what we could find.

(on the last Em of every verse play the intro riff twice, then continue.)

C G D Em
We'd been out a bout six weeks, and set up camp along side this creek,
C G Em D
I was young and he was green, but I tried to look after him.
C G D Em
Two brothers bedded down that night only one would see the morning light,
C G D Em
Waylaid by a lawless man and left alone to die.

C G D Em
Now it all seems like a dream I awoke to the sounds of my brother's screams,
C G Em D
Then I felt that awful pain as the bullet crashed into my side.
C G D Em
I'm not sure how far I ran, I never saw my brother again,
C G D Em
but the image of that man is burned into my mind.

C G D Em
Now it's, Fort Worth June 21st, Hell's Half Acre with its streets of dirt,
C G Em D
Lies before me like a dirty shirt, and I wait patiently.
C G D Em
A horse in the stable begins to whine, as the rider approaches the church bells chime,
C G D Em
Now its just a matter of time, and I got plenty.

C G D Em
He never saw what spooked his mare, but when he hit the ground I was standing there,
C G Em D
He drew his pistol but I did'nt care, I just laughed.
C G D Em
He looked in my eyes and knew I was the one, only this time I did'nt run.
C G D Em
I walked away and my job was done, but he knows, that I'll be back.

C D Em
Mmmmmmm, Hmmmmmmm, Hmmmmmmmm

C G D Em
Now guilt is a devil in layman's clothes when a man's mind wanders unopposed,
C G Em D
It conjures up many ghosts, that will haunt his dreams.
C G D Em
After weeks without sleep in a cheap hotel he finds the only way out of this hell,
C G D Em
Is to pull his pistol on himself and now we'll both rest in peace.
