MARILLION - Montreal
from the Sounds That Can't Be Made (2012) album

woah, one of their very best, what a ride...

G, A

Bm A
200 fates entwined inside the plane
A G
We watched as England dropped away from us again
A Bm
I wasn't waiting, I wasn't sure what I would find
A F#m G
I was prepared to let it happen on its own this time
A Bm A F#m G
I had a feeling I was floating into time spent amongst friends
A Bm A Em
Reintroduced from other strange and wonderful weekends
F#m G
As the seat belt signs announced the fall
A Bm
I realised I'd been falling for a while
A Em F#m
We'd been falling for some time into Montreal

G, Bm, F, Cmaj7 (2x)

G Bm
I saw ice upon the river as the plane came in to land
F Cmaj7
I heard Joni Mitchell singin' her poems of isolation
G Bm
The man at immigration said his friends all knew the band
F Cmaj7
Bizarre to come so far to an outstretched hand and easy conversation
G Bm
We were welcomed through arrivals without the usual transatlantic fuss
F Cmaj7
And greeted by the fans who led us to the chilly street onto the bus

Cm Ab Eb Bb/D
The snow had hung around on the corners of the vacant lots
Cm Ab Eb Bb/D
And France was singing in the air of hi-rise North America

A F#m
And as we made our way into the hotel hall
G Dmaj7
The man behind the desk broke a knowing smile, and said
"Hello sir, welcome back to Montreal."

A, F#m, G, Dmaj7

Em D/F# G A
We hid away for the day in our identical rooms
Em D/F# G A
Like we usually do - another new bed, upside down in our heads
Em D/F# G A
And afternoon was morning and night was afternoon
Em D/F# G A
Only the jet-lagged know the way I sleep tonight

So I Skyped home and said "It's me. How are you babe?
C Am G Fm
I can't be with you but I can see you on the screen
C Am G D
Technology is wonderful when it isn't in the way
C Am G Fm
The little one seems older now with every passing day

Cm Ab
I hope the vibes are good
Eb Bb/D
I'm behavin' as I should
Cm Ab
Going down to breakfast
Eb Bb/D
What time is it now there?
Cm Ab Eb Bb/D
I'll go shopping for shoes or whatever ensues
Cm Ab
Je t'aime my darling
Eb Bb/D
Je t'aime my darling
Em
See you soon"

C, Bm (7/8 time) (2x)

C
We were invited to the circus - guests of honour if you please
Bm
By a girl with an eskimo name
C
And in the cafe of the Cirque 'Soleil we bought Easter-eggs from outer-space
Bm
40 different languages are spoken in this place
C
And inside the steel-glass building I gazed up at the trapeze
Bm C
The building 30 metres tall - we watched the acrobat fall
Bm
He was quite safe
C
He was falling into Montreal
Bm
Into Montreal

Guitar solo:
Em, D/F#, G, A
C, Bm (7/8 time) (2x)

Em D/F# G A
Down at the sports-bar the ice-hockey never ends
Em D/F# G A
Down at the sports-bar the ice-hockey never ends
Em D/F# G A
Down at the sports-bar the ice-hockey never ends

Gm, C, Eb, Bbmaj7

Gm C Eb Bbmaj7
So up in my room I discovered Leonard Cohen on TV
Gm C Eb Bbmaj7
Live in London - ain't that perfect symmetry?!
Gm C Eb Bbmaj7
It warmed the heart to watch him float around the hall
Gm C Eb Bbmaj7
Soaking up, reflecting, radiating
Gm C Eb Bbmaj7 Gm
Just as I would, tomorrow night on the outstretched tender hands
C Eb Bbmaj7 Cm
Tender hands, tender hands of Montreal

Eb, Gm, Cm (2x)
Eb, Gm, F

Eb Gm Cm
The fleur de lis was always kind to me
Eb Gm Cm
I'll make the time if ever you should call
