Better Than I Was

by Mal Blum
Mal Blum

Biography:

Mal Blum (born 1988) is an American songwriter and performer from New York[1]

Critics often remark on Blum's strength as a lyricist. They spent their early career promoting self-booked diy solo tours and supporting other solo artists such as Mike Doughty, Melissa Ferrick, Jenny Owen Youngs, Amanda Palmer, and Jeffrey Lewis.

In 2014, Mal Blum signed to Don Giovanni records and announced they would be working on a new album produced by Marissa Paternoster of the band Screaming Females.

[Intro]
C

[Verse 1]
C
I pour steaming milk into paper cups
F
And start conversations with new strangers
G F C
The awkwardness finally burning off like a fever

[Verse 2]
C
But forgetting is a privilege, and I don't forget it
F
I drove up your old block, right past your apartment
G F C
The roommate you hated was carrying boxes of something

[Chorus]
G
Has your face gotten older?
F
Has your voice gotten lower?
Am
I feel the same
F
But the world keeps getting slower
D F
Something inside of me says
C
I'm better than I was

[Verse 3]
C
I couldn't come over, so I met you there
F
And you'd grown a bit taller, same gray in your hair
G F C
That I saw on your mother the day that I met her in Portland

[Verse 4]
C
You know, Maine is such a pleasant place
F
So I could see myself getting in the way
G F C
As soon as I settle, I'll know I can't stay

[Chorus]
G
Has my face gotten older?
F
Has my voice gotten lower?
Am
I feel the same
F
But the world keeps getting slower
D F
Something inside of me says
C
I'm better than I was

[Bridge]
D
And I heard the record that she had bought
F
In the coffee shop
F
But she had it wrong
G
Because he writes of loss
G
And impermanence
C
It's not a break up song
D
While I pour steaming milk
D
Into a paper cup
F
I start a conversation with a new stranger
G
Who says that being left by someone
G
Who don't get you isn't wrong
C
It's a favor

[Chorus]
G
And you're so scared of getting old
F
And I'm so scared of growing slow
Am
Most of all we're scared
F
We're always gonna be alone
D F
But even so something inside of me says
D F
Something inside of me says
D F
Something inside of me says
C
I'm better than before
