Madeleine Peyroux

La Javanaise

by Madeleine Peyroux
Madeleine Peyroux

Biography:

Madeleine Peyroux is a jazz singer who was born in 1974 in Athens, Georgia, USA, and raised in New York City and Paris, France. She is noted for her vocal style, which is highly reminiscent of Billie Holiday. Madeleine also has qualities similar to Ella Fitzgerald. Though Peyroux may remind some listeners of Holiday, there are differences, and she has her own sense of phrasing and interpretation.

Peyroux started singing at the age of fifteen, when she discovered street musicians in the Latin Quarter in Paris.

Four years of hard work!

This month of May we celebrated four years on the air. We continue working on the dissemination of this wonderful instrument, thank you for participating in our story!

I was pretty surprised to find that there are so few Madeleine Peyroux songs on
here at the moment (6!) since I thought she was pretty popular and her songs are
pretty tab-able. Oh well.

This is my favorite of hers. And it has a relatively standard jazzy chord
progression. Suggestions for how to play the chords are at the bottom. You can
actually play these chords in the conventional open string way, but it sounds
better to me higher up.

Cmaj7 C6 Dm7 G7
J'avoue j'en ai bavé pas vous mon amour
Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 C6
Avant d'avoir eu vent de vous mon amour
C7 Fmaj7
Ne vous déplaise
E7 Am
En dansant la Javanaise
Dm7 D#dim7 Em7 A7#5
Nous nous aimions
D9 G9
Le temps d'une chanson

À votre avis qu'avons-nous vu de l'amour
De vous à moi vous m'avez eu mon amour
Ne vous déplaise
En dansant la Javanaise
Nous nous aimions
Le temps d'une chanson

Hélas avril en vain me voue à l'amour

---

Beginner way (does not sound too good, but is easy)

Just play D7 and G7 instead of the D9 and G9.

Cmaj7 C6 Dm7 G7 C7 Fmaj7 E7 Am D#dim7 Em7 A7#5
e|-0-----0--1---1--0--0-----0--0--2------0---0--|
B|-0-----1--1---0--1--1-----3--1--1------3---2--|
G|-0-----2--2---0--3--2-----1--2--2------0---0--|
D|-2-----2--0---0--2--2-----0--2--1------0---3--|
A|-3-----3--x---2--3--x-----2--0--x------2---0--|
E|-x-----x--x---3--x--1-----0--x--x------0---x--|

Proper way

In the first two lines the high G is actually contained in every chord, so the
first two Dm7 are really Dm7sus4 or add4.
You'll also notice that in this chart below, Dm7 is mentioned twice. As I play
this song I move down the fretboard (towards the machine head) so in the "Nous
nous aimions" line the Dm7 D#dim7 Em7 progression starts round the 5th fret.

Cmaj7 C6 Dm7 G7 C7 Fmaj7 E7 Am Dm7 D#dim7 Em7 A7#5 D9 G9
e|-x-----x--x---x--x--x-----7--5--5---5------7---x----x--x--|
B|-8-----8--8---8--8--10----9--5--6---7------8---6----5--3--|
G|-9-----9--10--10-9--7-----7--5--5---5------7---6----5--2--|
D|-9-----7--10--9--8--9-----9--5--7---7------9---5----4--3--|
A|-x-----x--x---10-x--8-----7--x--5---6------7---x----5--x--|
E|-8-----8--10--x--8--x-----x--5--x---x------x---5----x--3--|
