Lydia Loveless

Jesus Was A Wino Too

by Lydia Loveless
Lydia Loveless

Biography:

Lydia Loveless (born September 4, 1990; as Lydia Ankrom) is an American alternative country singer-songwriter from Columbus, Ohio.

Blessed with a commanding, blast-it-to-the-back-of-the room voice, Loveless was raised on a family farm in Coshocton, Ohio, US—a small weird town with nothing to do but make music. With a dad who owned a country music bar, Loveless often woke up with a house full of touring musicians scattered on couches and floors.

Jesus was a Wino too
Lydia Loveless

Intro
C G F C

[Verse 1]
C
Well, some days you wake up
G
and life feels meaningless

You don’t even have the strength
C
to get up and get dressed

Then when you do, you see your
G
clothes are all torn to shreds

And you can’t even afford to buy
C
a needle and thread

C
So, you might go to church to
G
bow your head and pray

But that ain’t always enough to
C
get through the day

Sometimes you’ll feel bitter, you’ll
G
say that this priest is a mooch

And you might just take all of
C
your tithes with a bottle of hooch

[Chorus]
F
And if people knew, they would
C
look down on you
G
Don’t they know that it’s true?
F G C
Jesus was a wino, too

[Verse 2]
C
People may ask, “Why have your
G
lips turned black?”

“Hey, what the hell is so funny,

man? Why have your eyes gone
C
slack?“

They might feel high and mighty
G
when I can barely stand

Well, just tell them I couldn’t turn

down one my glass of the blood
C
of the lamb

[Chorus]
F
Because if people knew, they
C
would call me a fool
G
I wish they knew it was true:
F C
Jesus was a wino, too was a Wino too

[Chorus]
F
Because if people knew, they
C
would call me a fool
G
I wish they knew it was true:
F C
Jesus was a wino, too

[Verse 3]
F
And this here six-dollar bottle is
C
just about that all I can afford
D
If I can’t find a corkscrew, I’ll just
G
smash it open right here on the

floor
C
And you might call me crazy for
G
lapping this off the ground

But a few years ago I would be
C
drinking with Jesus right now

‘Cause they may not have had
G
Carlo Rossi way back in his day

Jesus had only water but he
F C
turned it to wine anyway

[Chorus]
F
And nobody asked, “What would
C
Jesus do?”
G F
‘Cause everybody knew Jesus

C
was a wino, too
F
No, nobody asked, “What would
C
Jesus do?”
G F
‘Cause everybody knew Jesus
C
was a wino, too

C F C F
Ah huhhhhhh ah huh
