by Liz Phair
Liz Phair

Biography:

Liz Phair (born Elizabeth Clark Phair on April 17, 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. She was a cornerstone in the underground early '90s indie rock movement for her songcraft and DIY ethics. Her sound developed at the turn of the century into something more akin to pop or adult contemporary.

Phair's entry into the music industry began when she met guitarist Chris Brokaw, a member of the band Come. Brokaw was visiting her San Francisco loft-mate Nora Maccoby when he heard Phair's songs

[Verse]
E A B E
Safe on
E A B E
The interstate
E A B E
New York
E A B E
Is three thousand miles away

[Chorus]
E A B E
And I'm not looking forward to following through
E A B E
But it's better than always running back into you
E A B E
I've closed my eyes and my bank account
E A B E
And gone west, young man

[Verse]
E A B E
Take off
E A B E
The parking brake
E A B E
Go coasting
E A B E
Into a different state

[Chorus]
E A B E
And I'm not looking forward to missing you
E A B E
But I must have something better to do
E A B E
I've got to tear my life apart
E A B E
And go west, young man
E A B E
And it feels like I've got something to prove
E A B E
But in some ways it's just something to do
E A B E
My friends turn me around and say
E A E A E A E A
You go west, young man

[Verse]
E A B E
Stepping
E A B E
Down off my platform shoes
E A B E
Sixty-
E A B E
Nine in the afternoon

[Chorus]
E A B E
And I'm waiting for someone in the know
E A B E
Like Pirner tells me on the radio
E A B E
Says, "Take it from someone who's been there before
E A B E
You go west, young man"
E A B E
And I'm looking for somebody to do
E A B E
My thinking for me 'till I come through
E A B
The state-line highway sign says
E A E A E A E A
You have gone west, young man

[Verse]
E A B E
And it feels like I've got something to prove
E A B E
But in some ways it's just something to do
E A B E
The state-line highway sign says

E A E A E A E
You have gone west, young man
