by Linda Thompson
Linda Thompson

Biography:

Linda Thompson (born Linda Pettifer) started her singing career in the 1960s, doing advertising jingles for money and singing in folk clubs for enjoyment. She changed her name to Linda Peters, and was romantically linked to Martin Carthy before working with Richard Thompson, whom she married in 1972. As part of Richard & Linda Thompson she sang on a string of critically acclaimed albums until a bitter split in 1982. After battling voice problems over the years since, she resurfaced with a solo album in 1996, and has worked sporadically since.

Linda Thompson - Nine Stone Rig

CAPO: 3rd fret

[Intro]
D C D C D

[Verse 1]
G D G C D
They shot him dead at the nine stone rig, beside the headless cross
G D G C D
And they left him lying in his blood, upon the moor and the moss
C D
They buried him at midnight when the dew fell cold and still
C D C D
And the women in grey forgot to pray when mist clung to the hill

[Verse 2]
G D C G D
Oh, gentle wind that's blowing south, from where my love repairs
G C D
Convey a kiss from his dear mouth and tell me how he fares
G D C G D
The word was carried back to me as if by god's command
C D C D
"Your sweetheart was murdered yesterday by your brother's jealous hand"

[Verse 3]
C D C D
No living man I'll love again since my darling went through death's door
C D
With one lock of his yellow hair, I'll chain my heart forever more
G D
Oh, mother dear, please make my bed and lay me down in sorrow
C D
My love, he died for me last night and I'll die for him tomorrow

[Verse 4]
G D G D
They shot him dead at the nine stone rig, beside the headless cross
G D
And left him lying in his blood, upon the moor and the moss
