Leadbelly

Where Did You Sleep Last Night

by Leadbelly
Leadbelly

Biography:

Huddie Ledbetter (January 20, 1888 - December 6, 1949) was an iconic American folk and blues musician, and multi-instrumentalist, notable for his strong vocals, his virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the songbook of folk standards he introduced.

Although Lead Belly most commonly played the twelve-string, he could also play the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and accordion. In some of his recordings, such as in one of his versions of the folk ballad "John Hardy", he performs on the accordion instead of the guitar.

[lyrics]
my girl, my girl, don't lie to me,
tell me where did you sleep last night?(come on and tell me baby)
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine,
I will shiver the whole night through.

My girl, my girl, where will you go,
I'm going where the cold wind blows.(where's that at baby?)
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine,
I will shiver the whole night through.

my girl, my girl, don't you lie to me,
tell me where did you sleep last night?(come on and tell me something about it)
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine,
I will shiver the whole night through.(shiver for me now)
Play verse w/ no singing

(what happened down there?)
My husband was a hard working man,
Still a mile and a half from here.(what happened to him?)
His head was found in the driving wheel,
and his body never never been found.

my girl, my girl, don't you lie to me,
tell me where did you sleep last night?(come on and tell me something about it)
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine,
I will shiver the whole night through.
