Karine Polwart

The Suns Comin Over The Hill

by Karine Polwart
Karine Polwart

Biography:

Karine Polwart (born 1971) is a Scottish singer-songwriter. She writes and performs music with a strong folk and roots feel, and her songs cover a wide area, from alcoholism to genocide.

Despite winning the Horizon Award for Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards 2005, Karine Polwart is no newcomer to the folk world, having previously been a member of Malinky and Battlefield Band. Her solo career is new, and it is for this that she has been particularly recognised.

[Verse 1]
G G/D Cadd9 G
Six rain ridden summers, and he still had an eye for me,
Cadd9 G Dsus4
He kissed me each evening, and told me he'd die for me,
Em7 D/F# G Cadd9 G
And then he... ran off the road, full of whisky and irony,
G Dsus4 C Cadd9
He always meant what he said------! | / / / |

[Verse 2]
G G/D Cadd9 G
So I took to whisky, so I could re - call...
Cadd9 G Dsus4
...The taste of his mouth ...on my mouth, that's all,
Em7 D/F# G Cadd9 G
And I tried the same trick with a truck, but it stalled,
G Dsus4 D C C/B C/A G G/F#
The engine was better off dead! | / / / |

[Chorus]
Em7 Gmaj7/B Cadd9 G
Oh, how the nights are long------,
Cadd9 G D D/A D/B D/C
Though life is longer still, | / / / |
Em7 Gmaj7/B Cadd9 G
Oh, how the nights are long------,
G G/A G/B Dsus4 D C C/B C/A
But the sun's com - in' over the hill!

[Verse 3]
G G/D Cadd9 G
The taste never left me, and I don't think it will,
Cadd9 G G G/A G/B Dsus4
And it caused me to supplement whisk - y with pills,
Em7 D/F# G Cadd9 G
But there was something in - side. ..that I couldn't kill,
G Dsus4 D C
Be - lieve me, I really did ...try!

[Verse 4]
G G/D
And there's some say, 'You get what you deserve',
Cadd9 G
But they're wrong,
Cadd9 G G G/A G/B Dsus4
Sometimes, you get what you're given, and then it's all gone,
Em7 D/F# G Cadd9 G
And you are lucky, if you are ...suff - iciently strong-----,
G Dsus4 D C C/B C/A G G/F#
To daily de - cide not to die! | / / / |

[Chorus]
Em7 Gmaj7/B Cadd9 G
Oh, how the nights are long-------,

Though life is longer still, | / / / |

[Verse 6]
G G/D Cadd9 G
I can't say there's many things I wouldn't change,
Cadd9 G Dsus4
There are better days gone than those that remain,
Em7 D/F# G Cadd9 G
But I can find joy in the sound of the rain,
G Dsus4 D Cadd9 C C/B C/A
You have to find joy where you can! | / / / |

[Chorus]
Em7 Gmaj7/B Cadd9 G
Oh, how the nights are long-------,
Cadd9 G D D/A D/B D/C
Though life is longer still, | / / / |
