Johnny Horton

The Sinking Of The Reuben James

by Johnny Horton
Johnny Horton

Biography:

John Gale "Johnny" Horton (April 30, 1925 – November 5, 1960) was an American country music and rockabilly singer most famous for his semi-folk, so-called "saga songs" which began the "historical ballad" craze of the late 1950s and early 1960s. With them, he had several major successes, most notably in 1959 with the song "The Battle of New Orleans" (written by Jimmy Driftwood), which was awarded the 1960 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording.

The Sinking Of The Reuben James:Johnny Horton.
- Johnny Horton Makes History - on COLUMBIA
Records in 1960.
(The Reuben James was the first U.S. naval ship
sunk by German U-boats in World War II.)

INTRO:
D G
What were their names, tell me, what were their
E
names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?

#1.
D A D
Have you heard of a ship called that Good Reuben James,
A D
manned by hard fighting men both for honor and fame?
D G D
She flew the stars and stripes of the land of the free,
D A D
but tonight she's in her grave at the bottom of the sea.

CHORUS:
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?

INTERLUDE: D G E A D

#2.
D A D
It was there in the dark of that uncertain night.
A D
That we waited for U-Boats and waited for that fight.
D G D
Then a whine and a rock and the great explosion roared.
D A D
And they laid Good Reuben James on that cold ocean floor.

CHORUS:
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?

INTERLUDE: D G E A D

#3.
D A D
Now, tonight there are lights in our country so bright.
D A D
On the farms and the cities they're tellin' of that fight.
D G D
And now our mighty battle ships will sail the bounding main.
D A D
And remember the name of that Good Reuben James.

CHORUS:
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?

OUTRO:
D G E
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
A D
Did you have a friend on the Good Reuben James?..(Fade.)

A sixties smash from Kraziekhat.
