GREAT SONG, IN CONVERSATIONAL STYLE, PLAYED IN PIANO AND REPEATING THE SAME PROGRESSION OVER
AND OVER AGAIN. IT'S JUST ONE LONG VERSE. PLAY THE CHORDS LOOSE, AS THOUGH BEING PLAYED ON THE KEYS....

[Verse]
G G7 C D
Long shot gone, it was a cold day for the losers
G Em C D
Who came down to Savannah to play for the weekend
G G7 C D
And don't let 'em slip away, boys, 'cause they'll catch you if you ain't lookin'
G Em C D
Keep your mitts up and your caps down at the ballpark

G G7 C D
She said we were both somethin' back then, had the whole world at our fingers
G Em C D
and I still remember the day that they called you up for the big show
G G7 C D
And you could have had me still, no but you never do listen
G Em C D G
You were too busy packin' your bags for the big lights, the big city, and Spring

[Interlude]
G G7 C D

[Verse]
G G7 C D
He said, I thought I was made outta gold, my big games, my big moments
G Em C D
'til I threw out my shoulder and they sent me back to the farm league
G G7 C D
Yeah, and these days, the best I can do is to keep cold ice on my good arm
G Em C D
And sometimes it hangs to my side in these late innings

G G7 C D
And all my ramblin' around and all my shameful days
G Em C D
The biggest mistake that I made was to leave you back in Georgia
G G7 C D
And I'm just a washed up ballplayer at best, but I did keep all of my earnin's
G Em C D G
I still got one good arm to hold ya, and one to pay anyone anywhere you think you might wanna go
G7 C D
Anywhere you think you might wanna go

[Interlude]
G G7 C D

[Verse]
G G7 C D
She said it seems so silly now, Lord knows you don't deserve it
G Em C D
With your lost towns and the highways and young girls and tears
G G7 C D
But I'd give an old man a chance, one more to see just what you're made of
G Em C D G
'Cause you're only as good as the woman who will wait for you after all these years

[Interlude]
G7 C D
G Em C G

[Verse]
G G7 C D
She said take me out to the ballgame, take me out to the crowd
G Em C D
And buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks and I don't care if I ever get back
G G7 C D
For it's root baby root for the home team, if they don't win, it's a shame
G Em C D G
Oh it's one...two...three strikes you're out at the old ball game

[Outro]
G7 C D G
