James Thomson

Rule Britannia

by James Thomson
James Thomson

Biography:

James Thomson is a young singer/songwriter hailing from NSW, Australia. He writes his own mix of blues, folk and country music.

James grew up on a property in rural NSW. He was introduced to blues and country music at a young age and it had a lasting impact. He didn’t learn an instrument till his family moved to the (relatively) big smoke of Newcastle. James found his mother's old guitar after the move and was determined to learn to play it. He started writing songs about three years later at the age of 19.

Rule, Britannia! chords
Thomson / Arne 1740

G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G

G Em G C D G
When Britain first, at heaven s command,
D G D Em A7 D
arose from out the azure main
Bm D G D A7 D
Arose, arose, arose from out the azure main.
G C Am C A7 D
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G
And guardian angels sang the strain.

G C
Rule Britannia!
Am C A7 D
Britannia rule the waves.
G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

G C
Rule Britannia!
Am C A7 D
Britannia rule the waves.
G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

G Em G C D G
The nations not so blest as thee,
D G D Em A7 D
Must in their turn to tyrants fall,
Bm D G D
Must in their turn, must in their turn,
A7 D
To tyrants fall,
G C
While thou shall flourish,
Am C A7 D
Shall flourish great and free,
G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G
The dread and envy of them all.

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful from each foreign stroke.
More dreadful, more dreadful
From each foreign stroke.
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.

G C
Rule Britannia!
Am C A7 D
Britannia rule the waves.
G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Thee haughty tyrants never shall tame,
All their attempts to bend thee down,
All their attempts, all their attempts
To bend thee down,
Will but arouse thy generous flame.
But work their woe and thy renown.

G C
Rule Britannia!
Am C A7 D
Britannia rule the waves.
G D7 G D7 G C G D7 G
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

To thee belongs the rural reign,
Thy cities shall with commerce shine,
Thy cities shall, thy cities shall
With commerce shine.
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.
