J.P. Cormier - Kelly's Mountain

CAPO: 3rd Fret

INTRO: G

CHORUS:
Am Em
If I could only fly___
C G
If I could build a bridge
D
I'd carry you my love
Em G
Across this barren ridge
Am Em
If there were just some way___
C G
I'd pull a carriage through the snow
C G D Em
Take ye over Kelly's Mountain to the village there below
C D G
And no one would ever know

Em G
Oh, the snow was high again in the year of 1910
C G D
When I rode over Kelly's top from Lake Bras d'Or
Em G
O'er the mountain I had come, without rapier, without gun
C G D C G
To fetch my father's order from the Saint Anne's Store

Em G
As I purchased my supplies, a pretty maiden caught my eye
C G D
Her beauty shone upon me like the sun
Em G
As my heart melted away, I heard somebody say
C G D C G
"That is the daughter fair of Hugh McGow-how-wan"

INTERLUDE: Em C D G

Em G
Well, she knew she'd caught my eye and she smiled as she walked by
C G D
Saying "Meet me when the stars come out tonight.
Em G
On the highroad I will wait, by old Don Campbell's gate
C G D C G
And we'll sing a song of love there in the moonlight"

CHORUS:
Am Em
If I could only fly___
C G
If I could build a bridge
D
I'd carry you my love
Em G
Across this barren ridge
Am Em
If there were just some way___
C G
I'd pull a carriage through the snow
C G D Em
Take ye over Kelly's Mountain to the village there below
C D G
And no one would ever know

Em G
I knew McGowan was a man with a very heavy hand
C G D
And his daughter was the meaning to his life
Em G
All her suitors, they had come to the wrong end of his gun
C G D C G
As long as he was living, she'd be no man's wife

INTERLUDE: Em C D G

Em G
But I met her 'neath the stars and I took her in my arms
C G D
And she said, "Please take me with you when you go.
Em G
Beneath my father's cruel hand, no longer I can stand
C G D C G
I'll leave with you and he will never know-ho-ho"

CHORUS:
Am Em
If I could only fly___
C G
If I could build a bridge
D
I'd carry you my love
Em G
Across this barren ridge
Am Em
If there were just some way___
C G
I'd pull a carriage through the snow
C G D Em
Take ye over Kelly's Mountain to the village there below
C D G
And no one would ever know

INSTRUMENTAL:

** Key Change - 2 Semitones Up **

F#m A
We were halfway up the hill when a gunshot broke the still
D A E
And I felt the pain burn deep within my side
F#m A
She said, "My God, we have to run, my father has a gun
D A E D A
And he'll never let you take me as your bri-i-ide!"

F#m A
In my pain I slipped and fell and it wasn't hard to tell
D A E
That McGowan cursed my soul not far behind
F#m A
I pulled her sovereign to my breast, saying "Here I've come to rest,
D A E D A
But there's something that I wish before I'm dy-i-ing

CHORUS:
Bm F#m
"If you could only fly___
D A
If you could build a bridge
E
You carry me, my love
F#m A
Across this barren ridge
Bm F#m
Please tell my father why___
D A
You had to bury me in the snow
D A E F#m
Near the top of Kelly's Mountain, where the winds forever blow
D E A
Or no one will ever know
D A E F#m
Near the top of Kelly's Mountain, where the winds forever blow___
N.C. D E A F#m D A
Or no one will ever know!"
