Irving Berlin

Wont You Play A Simple Melody

by Irving Berlin
Irving Berlin

Biography:

Irving Berlin (11 May 1888 – 22 September 1989), born Israel Isidore Baline, in Tyumen, Russia (according to other sources possibly Mogilev, now Belarus), was an American composer and lyricist. He was one of the most prodigious and famous American songwriters in history.

Berlin, who was Jewish, was one of the few Tin Pan Alley/Broadway songwriters who wrote both lyrics and music for his songs. Although he never learned to read music beyond a rudimentary level, he composed over 3,000 songs.

Four years of hard work!

This month of May we celebrated four years on the air. We continue working on the dissemination of this wonderful instrument, thank you for participating in our story!

Note: The first note I sing is a G (on "Won't). This may not be the key typically used,
so use a capo to fit your vocal or preferred style/sound. I also wrote this as a sort of
cover, so for those who sing the sing note by note, it may not fit (see post script).
This is my first tab so I hope you enjoy it =)
P.S. I am open to critiques.

G Em
Wont play a simple melody
C D
Just like my mother sang to me,
G Em
One with good old fashioned harmony
C G
Play a simple melody

G
Musical demon, set your honey a’dreamin’
Em
Won’t you play me some rag?
C
Just change that classical nag
D
To some sweet beautiful drag

G
If you will play from a copy of a tune that is choppy
Em
You’ll get all my applause
C
And that is simply because
G
I want to listen to rag

Pretty much the same chord progression throughout the song.
