Harvey Andrews

Give A Damn

by Harvey Andrews
Harvey Andrews

Biography:

Harvey Andrews (born Harvey John Andrews, May 7, 1943 in Birmingham) is an English singer, songwriter, and poet.

From 1964, Andrews supported his nascent career as a singer/songwriter by working as a schoolteacher, before becoming a full-time professional musician in 1966.

Andrews has produced 15 successful albums singing his own songs, many of which have also been recorded by other artists.

His emotive The Soldier transmits the same quiet desperation of a soldier about to die "in conflict" as Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est

Dm F C Am F Dm

---------------------
VERSE 1
********
C
When I was young, I joined the march
Am Dm
And sang 'The Long Way Down'
F
There's photos of me carrying
C Dm
My banner into town
F
And though it was a lonely path
C Am
The bomb we had to ban
Dm C
I had a dream, I wanted one
Am Dm C
I didn't give a damn

---------------------
VERSE 2
********
Dm C
I met the girl who's with me still
Am Dm
One festival in spring
F
We loved the tunes we loved the words
C Dm
We loved to stand and sing
F
We followed Bob, we followed Paul
C Am
We followed with a pram
Dm C
The times they were a-changin’
Am Dm C Am Dm
And we didn't give a damn

---------------------
VERSE 3
********
C
Then somewhere in the Seventies
Am Dm
The time just passed us by
F
We voted left, but shifted right
C Dm
And Bob found god on high
F
The mortgage and the office and
C Am
The rush hour traffic jam
Dm C
We chased that golden promise
Am Dm C
And we didn't give a damn

---------------------
VERSE 4
********
Dm C
The Eighties, god bless Maggie
Am Dm
Well, the Eighties they were fine
F
We re-discovered Paul
C Dm
And saw the unions brought in line
F
The British won the Falklands war
C Am
Who needed Uncle Sam?
Dm C
We waved our flags and cheered our lads
Am Dm C Am Dm
And didn't give a damn

---------------------
VERSE 5
********
C
I'm sixty now, and so's the wife
Am Dm
Our soldier son was free
F
He did his bit, he did us proud
C Dm
We watched him march in line
F
We saw him get his medal
C Am
Saw him smile at his old man
Dm C
we were so proud he was our son
Am Dm C
We didn't give a damn

---------------------
VERSE 6
********
Dm C
Then came that bloody murderer
Am Dm
The fool they call Hussein
F
To think that he would call our bluff
C Dm
The man was quite insane
F
And our lad, he went after him
C Am
We got a telegram
Dm C
Friendly fire, they said it was
Am Dm C
And now who gives a damn?

---------------------
VERSE 7
********
C
When I was young, I joined the march
Am Dm
And sang 'The Long Way Down'
F
There's photos of me carrying
C Dm
My banner into town
F
But somewhere down that lonely path
C Am
From then, to who I am
Dm C
I lost my dream, I lost my son
Am Dm C
Too late to give a damn
