Harry Chapin

She Is Always Seventeen

by Harry Chapin
Harry Chapin

Biography:

Harry Chapin (December 7, 1942 – July 16, 1981) was an American singer and songwriter. Chapin's debut album, Heads and Tales (1972), was a success thanks to the single "Taxi". His follow-up album, Sniper and Other Love Songs, was less successful; but his third, Short Stories, was a major success. Verities & Balderdash, released soon after, was even more successful, bolstered by the chart-topping hit single "Cat's in the Cradle". He also wrote and performed a Broadway musical, The Night That Made America Famous.

[Verse 1]
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
She has no fear of failure
Fmaj7 G
She's not bent with broken dreams
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
For the future's just beginning
Fmaj7 D Bm Am11
When you're always seventeen
A Fmaj7
It was nineteen sixty one when we went to Washington
G E7
She put her arms around me and said Camelot's begun
A Fmaj7
We listened to his visions of how our land should be
G E7
We gave him our hearts and minds to send across the sea

[Verse 2]
A Fmaj7
Nineteen sixty three white and black upon the land
G E7
She brought me to the monuments and made us all join hands
A Fmaj7
Scarcely six months later she held me through the night
G E7
When we heard of what had happened in that brutal Dallas light

[Chorus]
Fmaj7 Cmaj7 G Bm
Oh, she is always seventeen
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
She has a dream the she will lend us
D Em
And a love that we can borrow
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
There is so much joy inside her
D Em
She will even share our sorrow
Fmaj7 Cmaj7 D G
She's our past, our present, and our promise of tomorrow
Bm/F# Em Bm/D Cmaj7
Oh, truly she's the only hope I've seen
Fmaj7 D Bm Am11
And she is always seventeen

[Verse 3]
A Fmaj7
It was nineteen sixty five and we were marching once more
G E7
From the burning cities against the crazy war
A Fmaj7
Memphis, L.A. and Chicago we bled through sixty eight
G E7
'Till she took me up to Woodstock saying with love it's not too late
A Fmaj7
We started out the seventies living off the land
G E7
She was sowing seeds in Denver trying to make me understand
A Fmaj7
That mankind is woman and woman is man
G E7
And until se free each other we can not free the land

[Chorus]
Fmaj7 Cmaj7 G Bm
Oh, she is always seventeen
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
She has a dream the she will lend us
D Em
And a love that we can borrow
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
There is so much joy inside her
D Em
She will even share our sorrow
Fmaj7 Cmaj7 D G
She's our past, our present, and our promise of tomorrow
Bm/F# Em Bm/D Cmaj7
Oh, truly she's the only hope I've seen
Fmaj7 D Bm Am11
And she is always seventeen

[Verse 4]
A Fmaj7
Nineteen seventy two, I'm at the end of my rope
G E7
But she was picketing the White House chanting the truth's the only hope
A Fmaj7
In nineteen seventy five when the crooked king was gone
G E7
She was feeding starving children saying the dream must go on

[Chorus]
Fmaj7 Cmaj7 G Bm
Oh, she is always seventeen
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
She has a dream the she will lend us
D Em
And a love that we can borrow
Fmaj7 Cmaj7
There is so much joy inside her
D Em
She will even share our sorrow
Fmaj7 Cmaj7 D G
She's our past, our present, and our promise of tomorrow
Bm/F# Em Bm/D Cmaj7
Oh, truly she's the only hope I've seen
Fmaj7 D Bm Am11
And she is always seventeen
