Glenn Miller

In The Mood

by Glenn Miller
Glenn Miller

Biography:

Alton Glenn Miller was born in Clarinda, Iowa on March 1, 1904. He started his musical career when his father brought home a mandolin. As soon as possible, he traded the instrument for an old horn, which he practiced diligently.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Miller managed to earn a living working as a freelance trombonist in several bands. His first band was formed in 1937 but failed to distinguish itself and eventually broke up.

Following the break-up of his first band

In The Mood - Music by Joe Garland, 1939
- words by Andy Razaf
- Recorded by Glenn Miller, 1940 (#1) and again at #20 in 1943

[Intro]
G A7 Am7 D7

[Verse 1]
G
Who's the livin' dolly with the beautiful eyes?
G
What a pair of lips -- I'd like to try 'em for size.
C
I'll just tell her, "Baby, won't you swing it with me?"
G
Hope she tells me "Maybe" -- what a wing it will be.
D7
So I said politely, "Darlin' may I intrude?"
Am7 G C6 Eb7 D7 G6
She said don't keep me waitin' when I'm in the mood."

[Verse 2]
G
First I held her lightly and we started to dance;
G
Then I held her tightly -- what a dreamy romance!
C
And I said, "Hey, baby, it's a quarter to three...
G
There's a mess of moonlight, won't you share it with me?"
D7
"Well," she answered, "Mister, don't cha know that it's rude
Am7 G C6 Eb7 D7 G6
To keep my two lips waitin' when they're in the mood?"

[Chorus 1]
G Gdim Am7 D7b9
In the mood -- that's what she told me,
G Gdim Am7 D7b9
In the mood -- and when she told me
G Gdim Am7 D7b9
In the mood -- my heart was skippin';
D7 Ddim D7 Eb7 D7 G6
It didn't take me long to say, "I'm in the mood now."

[Chorus 2]
G Gdim Am7 D7b9
In the mood (oh joy) for all her kissin',
G Gdim Am7 D7b9
In the mood (oh joy) her crazy lovin',
G Gdim Am7 D7b9
In the mood (oh boy) what I was missin' --
D7 Ddim D7 Eb7 D7 G6
It didn't take me long to say "I'm in the mood now."
