But I'm told you're the best we had,
G/B
Were you so tall,
Am G
Did you play Basketball,
Dm F C
Was there a sweetheart at home,
G
Did you write her letters,
Am G Dm F C
Did it make you better face the great unknown,
Dm Em
Sam did you feel alone,
Bm A E
You were so far from home,
G A
I never knew you,
Bm C G C
But I know you're the best man I know,
Dm Em
Could you tell it was time,
Bm A E
See it coming in the back of your mind,
G A Bm C
When it was over, was it over,
G D Em Bm A E G A Bm C G C G/B Am G Dm F C
Sam I'm glad you're on my side,
G/B
I don't know you,
Am G
I never met you,
Dm F C
Can I call you Sam,

Did you have a son,
Am G
A daughter with a little one,

I might go and thank Sam you're the best that we have,
Bm A E
You make me happy and sad,
A G D/F# G
If you were here, I'd buy the beers,
A G D/F# G
I'd shake your hand and say good man,

And though the sun would shine about the same,
A G A Bm C
It's a better world because you came,
Am F C G/B Am G Dm F C
Sincerely yours, my kids will know your name,
