[Verse]
C Em C7 F
People, we're only people
E E7 Am Am/G
There's not much anyone can do, really do about that
D/F#
But it hasn't stopped us yet

C Em C7 F
People, we know so little about ourselves
E E7 Am Am/G
But just enough to wanna be nearly anybody else
D/F#
How does that add up? Oh

[Chorus]
Dm G
Friends, all my friends
Am Am/G F
Oh, I hope you're somewhere smiling
Dm G
Just know I think about you
Am Am/G F
More kindly than you and I have ever been
Gm F Em
And I'll see you the next time around the bend, oh ho

C Em C7 F E E7 Am Am/G D/F#
(Oh)

[Verse]
C Em C7 F
People, what's the deal?
E
You've been hurt
E7
And I've been hurt
Am Am/G D/F#
But what do we do now?

C Em C7 F
People, we're only people
E E7 Am Am/G D/F#
There ain't a thing one person can ever change about that Oh

[Chorus]
Dm G
Friends, all my friends
Am Am/G F
Oh, I hope you're somewhere smiling
Dm G
Just know I think about you
Am Am/G F
More kindly than you and I have ever been
Gm F Em
And I'll see you the next time around the bend, oh ho

C Em C7 F E E7 Am Am/G D/F#
(Oh)

[Coda]
F G C/E F
I think the end of it all may look a lot like the beginning
Dm G
Passed around from hand to hand
C/E Am
Screaming for no particular reason
F G
The company gets pretty thin
C/E F
So we start to shed all our distinctions
Dm
So why not me?
G
Why not you?
C/E F
Why not now?
