Fairport Convention

Closing Time

by Fairport Convention
Fairport Convention

Biography:

Fairport Convention is often credited with being one of the first English folk rock bands. Formed in 1967, Fairport rapidly developed from playing cover versions of American 'west coast' music to an individual style which melded rock music with traditional English folk tunes and songs.

Like their peers The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Jefferson Airplane they were blessed with several considerable individual talents and produced music that -at least initially- was eclectic, as well as exploratory.

[Intro]
G D G D

[Verse]
G
So, we're drinking and we're dancing
G
And the band is really happening
Em
And the Johnny Walker wisdom's running high
Bm
And my very sweet companion
Bm
She's an angel of compassion
Em
She's rubbing half the world against her thigh
C
Every drinker every dancer
C
Lifts a happy face to thank her
G B Em
And the fiddler fiddles something so sublime

[Verse]
D
And the women tear their blouses off
D
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
C
And it's partner found and it's partner lost
C
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
G
It's closing time
C
And the women tear their blouses off
C
And the men they dance on the polka-dots
G B
And it's partner found and it's partner lost
Em C
And it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
G
It's closing time
D
Closing time

[Verse]
G
Well, we're lonely, we're romantic
G
Society's psyched with acid
Em
And the Holy Spirit's crying, "Where's the beef?"
Bm
And the moon is swimming naked
Bm
And the summer night is fragrant
Em
With a mighty expectation of relief
C
So we struggle and we stagger
C
Down the snakes and up the ladder
G B Em
To the tower where the blessed hours chime

[Verse]
D
And I swear it happened just like this
D
A sigh, a cry and a hungry kiss
C
The gates of love they budged an inch
C
I can't say much has happened since
G
But closing time
C
I swear it happened just like this
C
A sigh, a cry and a hungry kiss
G B
The gates of love they budged an inch
Em C
But you can't say much has happened since
G
Since closing time
D
Closing time

[Bridge]
Em
I loved you for your beauty
Em
But that doesn't make a fool of me
Bm
You were in it for your beauty too
Em
And I loved you for your body
Em
There's a voice that sounds like god to me
A
Declaring that your body's really you

[Instrumental]
D C G/B D/A

[Verse]
C
But I loved you when our love was blessed
C
And I love you now there's nothing left
G B Em
But sorrow and a sense of overtime
D
And I missed you since the place got wrecked
D
And I just don't care what happens next
C
Looks like freedom but it feels like death
C
It's something in between, I guess
G
It's closing time
D
Closing time

[Verse]
G
Oh, we're drinking and we're dancing
G
Yet there's nothing really happening
Em
This place is dead as heaven on a Saturday night
Bm
And my very close companion
Bm
Gets me humping, gets me laughing
Em
She's a hundred but she's wearing something tight
Em
(Tight, tight, tight, tight, tight, tight)
C
And I lift my glass to the awful truth
C
But you can't reveal to the ears of youth
G B Em
Except to say, it isn't worth a dime
D
And the whole damn place goes crazy twice
D
It's once for the Devil and it's once for the Christ
C
But the boss don't like those dizzy heights
C
We're busted in the blinding lights
G
It's closing time
D G
It's closing time

[Outro]
G
(Closing, drinking, Devil, dancing)
D G
Closing time
D G
Closing time
D G
Closing time
