Ezra Furman

Pot Holes

by Ezra Furman
Ezra Furman

Biography:

Ezra Furman is a singer and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. It is difficult to peg her as part of a single musical genre because she loves to experiment with different styles of songwriting. Suffice it to say that Ezra makes up songs and plays them on her acoustic guitar with ferocious energy and gut wrenching sincerity. Her music is derivative of, but never completely part of, a number of musical genres: rock, blues, punk, folk and pop are some prime examples.

[Intro]
G Em A D D7
(x4)

[Verse]
G
It's a beautiful city
Em
We've been living in lately
A
Never go to the South side
D D7
(Don't you go down to the South side.)

G
And there's pot holes
Em
Sleeping in the black concrete
A
And your little rebel rebel's
D D7
Just a pebble in a big stream

G
Yes, we're living underneath a
Em
World imperial empire
A
And it's built on the flimsy web of
D D7
Your money and your desire

G
We built this city on the
Em
Ruins of rock and roll
A
One minute you're driving on smooth pavement
D D7
Then you're down in a dark pot hole

G
And if there's black men sleeping on
Em
Your white concrete
A
You go and see a ten dollar movie
D D7
Then you're caught in the web of the waking dream

[Intro]
G Em A D D7
(x4)

[Break]
G Em A D D7
(x4)

[Verse]
G
It's a beautiful city
Em
But the streets are full of holes
A
I spend my whole life on the North side
D D7
(I don't go down to the South side.)

G
And I drive on the concrete
Em
And I pay my taxes too
A
And I could write a letter to the mayor
D D7
But we both got a lot to do

G
And I admit it's inconvenient
Em
To get robbed in a combat zone
A
Well, shit, I had to cancel my credit card
D D7
Had to buy me a brand new phone

G
But it's a beautiful city
Em
And the cops are on our side
A
I mosey down to check out the
D D7
Angry mob just to keep myself occupied

G
And you can talk about Chicago
Em
You can talk about New York
A
You can talk about London, England
D D7
You can have a nice day, take a walk in the park

G
But there's always at least two
Em
Different cities in your town
A
And if you can't look at the dark one
D
Then you'll spend your life living
D7
Down in a dark pot hole

[Outro]
G Em A D D7
