[Intro]
D G (x2)

[Verse 1]
D G D G
Well I said, "Take it or leave it," and she left it on the bedroom floor
D G D G
There was quiet in the corners, there was trouble in a bag behind the door
D G D G
And all the lies too oft repeated, they were seated in repose upon the porch
D G D G
And in the midst of all this clamor is the struggle to remember us before

[Chorus]
D G
Now that you're holding up your diary every time we meet
D G
Saying this may be the single saddest book there'll ever be
D G
Sit down beside me, pick a place and read
D G
And I will hear you, and I will hear you

[Post-Chorus]
Bm D G
And on that day you took your turn, I sat with loneliness we learned
D Bm
Hungry as the desert sun, darling of the doomed and drunk
D
And all the bad news that can fit jumps in my ear
G D G
And does insist that these things always end like this
D G
Like this
D
Whoaaaa
D G D G
This, like this

[Verse 3]
D G
Well we knew there would be trials
D G
We knew there would be falls
D G
And it was gonna take a while yet
D G
To start to see results

[Chorus]
D G
Now that you're holding up your diary every time we meet
D G
Saying this may be the single saddest book there'll ever be
D G
Sit down beside me, pick a place and read
D G
And I will hear you, and I will hear you

[Post-Chorus]
Bm D G
And on that day you took your turn, I sat with longing as we learned
D Bm
Hungry as the desert sun, darling of the doomed and drunk
D
And all the bad news that can fit jumps in my ear
G D G
And does insist that these things always end like this
D G
Like this
