Dustin Welch

Across The Rubicon

by Dustin Welch
Dustin Welch

Biography:

Dustin Welch was born on a cold Winter Solstice in a haunted plantation house on the grounds of a Tennessee horse farm. His birthroom was heated by a red-hot $80 tin stove that burned whatever deadwood trees his dad could drag out of the woods by tractor and chains. He was the first born son of a first born son. His mother was the daughter of an Indian Princess, and the grand-daughter of one of the last living original members of the Osage Tribe. That very night his father made a silent promise

[Verse I]

E A E
Stepped outside on my front porch this morning and lit a cigarette
E A E
I was putting all the pieces back together but hadn’t got it yet
E A E
Sometimes I need a minute for my eyes to adjust to the light
E A E
And I couldn’t quite remember what it was that kept me up all night

[Verse II]
E A E
I woke up from the middle of a dream just as dawn began to break
E A E
Slowly it is starting to sink in, suddenly I’m wide awake
E A E
There was a dark storm that was closing in on us, all the light disappeared
E A E
You said something about staying on the move or else you’d die right here

[Chorus]
C#m E
Now the water’s rise on the river wide
C#m E
You’ve already gone across the Rubicon
A E B
But you will catch me coming around
A E B
Once the sediment settles down
A E B
And I will brave the narrows deep
A E B
Just to sweep you off your feet

[Intro]
E F#m G#m B C#m
E F#m G#m B C#m

[Verse III]
E A E
Now there comes a time when nothing is for certain and you’re working ‘gainst the clock
E A E
The worst ain’t ever over till you’re all alone and sober taking stock
E A E
But when we’re out of explanations, we turn all of our questions to the sky
E A E
As I stand beneath the heavens, I swear this valley won’t run dry

[Ending Chorus]
C#m E
Now the water’s rise on the river wide
C#m E
You’ve already gone across the Rubicon
A E B
But you will catch me coming around
A E B
Once the sediment settles down
A E B
And I will brave the narrows deep
A E B
Just to sweep you off your feet
A E B
And I will brave the narrows deep
A E B
Just to sweep you off your feet

[Outro]
E
