Dream Theater

Beneath The Surface

by Dream Theater
Dream Theater

Biography:

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They subsequently dropped out of their studies to concentrate further on the band that would ultimately become Dream Theater. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remained together until September 8, 2010, when Portnoy left the band. Mike Mangini was announced as the new permanent drummer on April 29, 2011.

[INTRO - THEME]
| E | E/G# A | E | F#m A |
| E | E/G# A | E | C#m A |

[Verse 1]
E E/G#
Is there ever really a right time?
C#m A
You had led me to believe someday you'll be there for me
E E/G#
When the stars above the light
C#m A
When you weren't so consumed I kept looking for the clues
F#m B
So I waited in the shadows of my heart
F#m B
And still the time was never right

[Chorus 1]
E A
Until one day I stopped caring
E B
And began to forget why I longed to be so close
E C#m
And I disappeared into the darkness
F#m C#m
And the darkness turned to pain and never went away
F#m A B E
Until all that remained was buried deep beneath the surface

[INTERLUDE 1 - THEME]
| E | E/G# A | E | F#m A |
| E | E/G# A | E | C#m A |

[Verse 2]
E E/G#
A shallow of what things could've been
C#m A
Tired bones beneath of them I've guarded secrets out your frame
E E/G#
Sort of thing I never knew
C#m A
You were searching for the words, for the moment to emerge
F#m B
Yet the moment never came
F#m B
You couldn't risk my fragile frame

[Chorus 2]
E A
Until one day you stopped caring
E B
And began to forget why I tried to be so close
E C#m
And you disappeared into the darkness
F#m C#m
And the darkness turned to pain and never went away
F#m A B E/G#
Until all that remained was buried deep beneath the surface

[Interlude 2]
| G#m | A | E | B |
| G#m | A | E | B |

[MID-8]
G#m A
I would scream just to be heard
E B
As if yelling at the stars, I was bleeding just to feel
G#m A
You would never say a word
E B B (let ring)
Kept me reaching in the dark, always something to conceal

[Chorus 3]
E Emaj7 E4 (let ring)
Until one day I stopped caring
E B
And began to forget why I longed to be so close
E C#m
And I disappeared into the darkness
F#m C#m
And the darkness turned to pain and never went away
F#m A B E
Until all that remained was buried deep beneath the surface
