Donovan Woods

Im Still Sweet

by Donovan Woods
Donovan Woods

Biography:

Donovan Woods’ latest album is an acoustic reimagining of songs we already know, and yet it reveals new shades of his acclaimed songwriting and spectral singing that leaves his listeners hanging on every word.

Released on May 3 on Woods’ Meant Well label, The Other Way mines fresh meaning from the songs first collected on Both Ways, the Canadian artist’s 2018 release that scored him his first Juno Award (contemporary roots album) and a Canadian Country Music Award (roots album).

I don't think the lyrics are 100%.
Please correct if you know what he says especially in the 1st verse.
Lots of hammer ons and hammer offs. Lots.
Capo 3 on album version.

[Intro]

C F C G x2

[Verse]

C F C
Here's a song that soldiers used to sing
G C F C G
You can hear it on a plane
C F
Jimmy was a folk song
C G C F C G
A herald and a parable the same

C F C
Back at home things are getting weird
G C F C G
My sister fell in love with my own friend
C F C G
We had a falling out so long ago
C F C G
I don't remember when

[Chorus]

C F C G
I'm still sweet
C F C G
I'm still sweet
Am F
I'm still down there at night
C G
Talk to your sister she was fine
C F C G
But I was sweet

Am G F
But if I had gone back home
C F C G
I wouldn't know
C F C G
I wouldn't know
C F C G
I wouldn't know

[Verse]

C F
Back for more he's screaming out
C G C F C G
He's scratching around for some kind of proof
C F
He says we're painting over culture love
C G C F C G
We're blowing out the door to save the roof
C F
Back at home getting hated on
C G C F C G
My sister hates the guts of my old friend
C F
We had a falling out
C G C F
Should've fixed it before it began
C G
We didn't know back then

[Chorus]

C F C G
I'm still sweet
C F C G
I'm still sweet
Am F
I'm still down there at night
C G
Talk to your sister she was fine
C F C G
But I was sweet

Am G F
And if I had gone back home
Am G F
They say that'll steal your soul
Am G F
Leave you hard and cold

C F C G
I'm still sweet
C F C G
I'm still sweet
C F C G
I'm still sweet
Am F
I'm still down there at night
C G
Talk to your sister she was fine
C F C G
But I was sweet

[Outro]
C F C G
