Don Mclean

Birthday Song

by Don Mclean
Don Mclean

Biography:

Donald McLean III (born October 2, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter, best known for his 1971 hit song "American Pie", an 8.5-minute folk rock "cultural touchstone" about the loss of innocence of the early rock and roll generation (US #1 for four weeks in 1972 and UK #2).

McLean's grandfather and father, both also named Donald McLean, had roots originating in Scotland. The Buccis, the family of McLean's mother, Elizabeth, came from Abruzzo in central Italy.

[Verse 1]

Amaj7 F#m Bm7 Eadd9 E6
If I could say the things I feel, it wouldn't be the same
Amaj7 F#m Bm7 E6
Some things are not spoken of, some things have no name
Amaj7 F#m Bm7 F
And though the words come hard to me I'll say them just for you
Amaj7 F#m Bm7 E
For this is something rare for me this feeling is so new

[Chorus]
Amaj7 Bm7 E
You see I love the way you love me
Amaj7 Bm7 E
Love the way you smile at me
Amaj7 Bm7 E Amaj7 F#m Amaj7/E
I love the way we live this life we're in

[Verse 2]
A7 F#m Bm7 E
Long ago I heard the song that lovers sing to me
A7 F#m Bm7 E
And through the days with each new phrase I hummed that melody
A7 F#m Bm7 F
And all along I loved the song but I never learned it through
A7 F#m Bm7 E
But since the day you came along, I've saved it just for you

[Chorus]
Amaj7 Bm7 E
You see I love the way you love me
Amaj7 Bm7 E
Love the way you smile at me
Amaj7 Bm7 E D D/C# Bm7
I love the way we live this life we're in

[Bridge]
D G C Am
I don't believe in magic but I do believe in you
Dm G
And when you say you believe in me
Am E6
There's so much magic I can do

[Verse 3]
Amaj7 F#m Bm7 E
Now you see me, now you don't watch me dive below
Amaj7 F#m Bm7 E
Deep down in your love lake where the sweet fish come and go
Amaj7 F#m Bm7 F
And I might sink, and I might drown but death don't mean a thing
Amaj7 F#m
'Cause life continues right or wrong
Amaj7 F#m
When I play this Birthday song
D7
I learned from you
Amaj7
And you can't even sing...
