Del Shannon

The Prom

by Del Shannon
Del Shannon

Biography:

Del Shannon (30 December 1934–8 February 1990) (born Charles Weedon Westover in Coopersville, Michigan) was an American rock and roller who launched into fame with the No. 1 hit "Runaway" (1961) which introduced the musitron, an early form of the synthesizer played by "Runaway" co-writer and keyboard player Max Crook.

Shannon followed up with "Hats Off to Larry", another big hit, and the less popular "So Long, Baby", another song of breakup bitterness.

The Prom:Del Shannon
Album - Runaway With Del Shannon -
released on BIG TOP and LONDON Records
in 1961.
(I got the lyrics off the original recording.
When he did it live he changed the lyrics a
bit in the BRIDGE. I always go with the original.)

INTRO: Ab Db

#1.
Db Bbm
On my way to the senior prom, I saw a crowd

all gathered round.
Gb Ab
I stopped the car, got out to see just what

it could be.
Db Bbm
There lying near the crowd was a girl dressed

in a gown.
Gb Ab
I walked up so I could see just who it could be.

#2.
Db Bbm
Knelt down by her side..tears came into my eyes.
Gb Ab
Did there lie the one I love..the one I'd always love.
Db Bbm
Then she said, take this ring of mine, you are my

love divine.
Gb Ab Db
And as our lips met, I know, I can't forget..the way
Bbm
my heart cried..the way it hurt inside.
Gb Ab Db
She's gone so far away..my lonely heart must pay.
Bbm Db Bbm
(She, she's gone..gone, she's gone.)

BRIDGE:(Spoken:)
Db Bbm
There lies the one I love..the one I'll always love.
Gb Ab
If I had picked her up on time, her precious love

would still be mine.
Db Bbm
The love, the love she gave to me will always stay with me.
Gb Ab
Til the day we meet, til the day you return to me.

#3.
Db Bbm
Then my heart begins to cry, it hurts so deep inside.
Gb Ab Db
She's gone so far away..my lonely heart must pay.

OUTRO:
Bbm Db Bbm
(She, she's gone..gone, she's gone.)

Bbm Db Bbm
(She, she's gone..gone, she's gone.)(Fade.)

A sixties smash from Kraziekhat.
