Dear Evan Hansen

To Break In A Glove

by Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen

Biography:

Dear Evan Hansen is nothing short of a Broadway sensation. With music and lyrics written by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul and book written by Stephen Levenson, the still-running 2015 musical tells the story of a lonely young man, the epnonymous Evan Hansen (played by Ben Platt until November 2017) tells a viral lie that escalates to crippling heights and serves as a commentary on our social media obsessed culture and tendency to selfishly wear other people's tragedies.

[Intro]
Dsus2 Dsus

Evan:
N.C.
This glove is really cool. Wow.

Larry:
N.C.
Why don't you take this one?

Evan:
Dsus2 Dsus
Oh. No. I couldn't.

Larry:
N.C.
Why not?

Evan:
Dsus2
Are you sure?

[Verse 1]
Larry:
E(add4)
I bought this glove a thousand years ago
Asus/G
For some birthday
Dsus2 Dsus Dsus2
Or some Christmas that has come and gone
E(add4)
I thought we might play catch or- I don't know
Asus/G Dsus2
But he left it in the bag with the tag still on

Dsus2 Dsus
You'd have to break it in, though, first. You can't catch anything with it that stiff.

Evan:
Dsus2
How do you break it in?

[Verse 2]
Larry:
E(add4)
It's all a process that is really quite precise
Bsus/G Dsus2 Dsus
A sort of secret method known to very few
Esus2 F#add4
So, if you're in the market for... professional advice
Asus/G Dsus2 Dsus
Well, today could be a lucky day for you

[Interlude 1]
N.C.
Shaving cream.

Evan:
N.C.
Shaving cream?

Larry:
Dsus2 Dsus
Oh yeah. You rub that in for about five minutes. Then you tie it all up with rubber bands, put it under your
Dsus2 Dsus
mattress, and sleep on it. And you've got to do it for at least a week. Every day. Consistent.

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Bm7 A(add4)
And though this method isn't easy
G(add2) Dsus2 F#7/C# Bm7
Ev'ry second that you spend is gonna pay off
B7 A
It'll pay off in the end

[Chorus 1]
Larry:
F5
It just takes a little patience
F5/E
It takes a little time
F5/Eb
A little perseverance
F/Bb Bbsus2 F5/Bb F/Bb
And a little uphill climb
F5
You might not think it's worth it
Cm11
You might begin to doubt
F/Bb
But you can't take any shortcuts
G(add2)/B
You gotta stick it out
F/C
And it's the hard way
Bm11
But it's the right way
C7sus/G Csus
The right way
Fsus2
To break in a glove

[Interlude 2]
Larry:
Fsus Fsus2/Bb Bbsus2
With something like this, you have to be ready to put in the work. Make the commitment.

N.C.
What do you think?

Evan:
A9sus Dsus2
I mean, definitely.

[Verse 3]
Larry:
E7(add4)
Some people say, "Just use a microwave
Gmaj7 G5 Dsus2 Dsus
Or try that run-it-through-hot-water technique"

Dsus2 E7(add4)
Well, they can gloat about the time they save
Gsus2 Asus/G Dsus2
'Til they gotta buy another glove next week

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Larry:
D Dsus F5
It... just takes a little patience Evan:
F5/E
It takes a little patience
F5/E
It takes a little time
F5/Eb
It takes a little time
F5/Eb
A little perseverance
F5/Eb
Perseverance
F5/Eb
And
F/Bb Bbmaj9
A little uphill climb A little uphill climb

[Chorus 2]
F(add2)/C
And it's the hard way
Bm11
But it's the right way
Bbsus2 Csus
The right way The right way

[Bridge 1]
Larry:
Ab(add2)
'Cause there's a right way
Eb(add2)/G
In ev'rything you do
Fm7
Keep that grit Evan:
Db6
Keep that grit
Dbsus2 Eb Db Eb
Follow through Follow through

[Bridge 2]
Larry:
A5 Eb Fm7 Eb(add4) Dbsus2 Eb
Even when ev'ryone around you thinks you're crazy
Db(add2) Eb Fm7 Eb(add4) Dbsus2
Even when ev'ryone around you lets things go
Eb Eb(add4) Eb(add4)/F
Whethere you're prepping for some test
Dbsus2
Or you're miles from some goal
Eb C7/E
Or you're just trying to do what's best
Fm7 Ab/C Db(add2)
For a kid who's lost control

[Chorus 3]
Ab/Eb
You do the hard thing
Dm7
'Cause that's the right thing
Dbsus2 Bbm9 Fsus2 Fsus
Yeah, that's the right thing

[Interlude 3]
Evan:
Fsus2 Fsus Fsus2/Bb Bbsus2
Connor was really lucky. To have a dad that... a dad who cared so much. About... taking care of stuff.

Larry:
N.C.
Shaving cream. Rubber bands. Mattress. Repeat. Got it?

Evan:
N.C.
Got it.

[Outro]
Larry:
F/C
It's the hard way Evan:
Bm11
But it's the right way
Gm7 Csus
The right way The right way
Fsus2
To break in a glove To break in a glove

Larry:
Fsus F
You're good to go.
