Davy Knowles

A Cautionary Tale The Students Of The Plaza Hotel

by Davy Knowles
Davy Knowles

Biography:

Davy Knowles has known what he wanted to do with his life since the age of 11.
I was in the car with my dad, and he put on a cassette of Dire Straits' 'Sultans of Swing,'" explains the 21-year-old guitarist, singer and songwriter. "I just fell in love with the music then and there. That track changed my life, and I realized, 'I really want to be able to do that.'

Hailing from the Isle of Man, the tiny kingdom in the middle of the Irish Sea, might have posed a challenge to that childhood epiphany for a lesser talent.

Very funny song posted by Davy on his facebook page after he and his sister took a trip
to Malta. The song is pretty straight forward with the same chord progression through
every verse and there is no chorus. He plays it with a capo on the 3rd fret.

Capo 3

Intro: C C7 F Fm C G C G-C

Verses 1-7:
C C7
After a rather tough year, we booked a holiday
F Fm
Under the sun, by a sandy bay
C G C G-C
We packed up our bags and we left

C C7
We checked into the hotel and our hopes were high
F Fm
But this swarm of god damned students shoved right by
C G C G-C
They nearly knocked us off our god damned feet

C C7
We fought them to the lift but we didn't stand a chance
F Fm
When we finally got in we were pressed against the glass
C G C G-C
Stopping and hitting every floor

C C7
Safely in our room, mildly annoyed
F Fm
We poured ourselves a glass of wine, then we heard a noise
C G C G-C
It was the god damned students shouting from below

C C7
So we went up to the pool, looking for a spite
F Fm
The students were already there, shouting with all their might
C G C G-C
Is there nowhere in this place that we can go

C C7
Well I thought that I might dip a toe, maybe take the plunge
F Fm
But it was overrun with students absorbing water like a sponge
C G C G-C
They mocked me while I loitered by the pool

C C7
I was just about to take the dive when one of them jumped in
F Fm
And I thought to myself, well I hope that he can't swim
C G C G-C
But he floated like a god damned greasy cork

-Solo-

Verses 8-13:
C C7
Well back down in the corridors, weaving in and out
F Fm
The students lying on the floor, I gave a little shout
C G C G-C
As I tripped over a god damned iPhone wire

C C7
Enraged by this point, well I asked the hotel staff
F Fm
Is there something you can do, but all they did was laugh
C G C G-C
The students are here to stay

C C7
They came from Italy, Germany, Espana too
F Fm
But their presence in this hotel makes me want to bash a few
C G C G-C
I'll tell you some lessons you should learn

C C7
Don't monopolize the lift, don't go running in the hall
F Fm
Don't take selfies on the roof unless you plan to fall
C G C G-C
I'll tell you something else that you should learn

C C7
Don't yell in the dead of night, try to learn something each day
F Fm
Most importantly of all, please stay out of our way
C G C G-C
We've paid for our hotel room as well

C C7
We should've gone to Briton, or maybe Mexico
F Fm
Or anywhere there is, where the students will not go
C G C G-C C7 (ring)
Next year we will take a holiday at home
