[Intro]
E E/D# D A
E E/D# D A

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, your dreams of long ago?
F#m E D E/A
Out beyond the break wall, her silver sails would shine
F#m A B
I swore one day that schooner would be mine

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, your triumphs and your woes?
F#m E D E/A
I bought that stately sailing ship, Leazof was her name
F#m A B
But all that pride and joy, she brought such pain

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, where did your young boy go?
F#m E D E/A
My Jimmy was beside me when the sea began to rise
F#m A B
And swept him overboard before my eyes

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, where did your nephews go?
F#m E D E/A
They fought the heavy current as our ship they tried to save
F#m A B
And now the St. Clair River is their grave

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, how it felt when she was sold?
F#m E D E/A
I turned my hand to farming, sewing seeds and splitting rails
F#m A/G# A B
But it's nothing like the wind inside a schooner's mighty sails

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, how she came to rest below?
F#m E D E/A
Heavy wind off Saginaw, the cargo shifted fast
F#m A B
The crew escaped, the ship was free at last

E E/D# D A
Captain John, oh captain! Captain John Munroe!
E E/D# D A
Won't you tell me captain, how she found McGregor's shoal?
F#m E D E/A
Didn't warn a Yankee grave, the minute she was free
F#m A/G# A E
Leazof headed home again to me

E E/D# D A
E E/D# D A
E E/D# D A
E E/D# D A

Repeat and fade
