Dave Gunning

Broom O The Cowdenknowes

by Dave Gunning
Dave Gunning

Biography:

“There's a song in there somewhere," sings Dave Gunning optimistically on his seventh album We're All Leaving, but the Pictou County, Nova Scotia performer is being far too modest.

Scoring three 2010 East Coast Music Award Nominations for Songwriter, Male Solo Recording and FACTOR Recording of the Year, and recently named as a Finalist in the Great American Song Contest and International Songwriting Competition for his song, Before The Morning Sun (co-written by James Keelaghan), Gunning is on the move.

Dave Gunning - Broom O' The Cowdenknowes

CAPO: 2nd Fret

[INTRO]
G C G C

G Bm C G
How Blithe was I each morning to see
C D
My love came o'er the hills
G Bm C G
She skipped the burn and ran to me
Am D
I met her with goodwill

G Bm C G
We neither herded ewes nor lamb
C D
While the flocks near us lay
G Bm C G
She gathered in the sheep at night
Am D
And cheered me all of the day

[CHORUS]
G Bm C G
Oh, the broom, the bonnie, bonnie broom
C D
The broom o' the Cowdenknowes
G Bm C G
Fain would I be in the Old Country
Am D
Herding her father's ewes

G Bm C G
She tuned her pipe and reed so sweet
C D
The birds stood listening by__
G Bm C G
And even the dull cattle stood and gazed
Am D
Charmed with her melody

G Bm C G
Hard fate that I should banished be
C D
Gone way over hill and moor
G Bm C G
Because I loved the fairest lass
Am D
That ever yet was born

[CHORUS]
G Bm C G
Oh, the broom, the bonnie, bonnie broom
C D
The broom o' the Cowdenknowes
G Bm C G
Fain would I be in the Old Country
Am D
Herding her father's ewes

[INSTRUMENTAL]
G C G C D G C G Am D

G Bm C G
Adieu, ye Cowdenknowes, adieu
C D
Farewell all your pleasures there
G Bm C G
To wander by her side again
Am D
Is all I crave or care

[CHORUS]
G Bm C G
Oh, the broom, the bonnie, bonnie broom
C D
The broom o' the Cowdenknowes
G Bm C G
Fain would I be in the Old Country
Am D
Herding her father's ewes

[CHORUS]
G Bm C G
Oh, the broom, the bonnie, bonnie broom
C D
The broom o' the Cowdenknowes
G Bm C G
I wish I were in the Old Country
Am D
Herding her father's ewes
