Dar Williams

Traveling Again Traveling I

by Dar Williams
Dar Williams

Biography:

American singer-songwriter Dar Williams lives at the intersection of pop and folk. She fuses many genres (blues, rock, jazz), resulting in a rather organic sound. She has been making music for over a decade.

Her studio album My Better Self finds Dar at an unequivocally brazen crossroads. Reflecting on American politics, the disillusionment and apathy of youth, and the female experience, Dar makes no apology for her outspoken beliefs.

Her 2008 album, entitled Promised Land.

Dar Williams - Traveling Again (Traveling I)

CAPO: 2nd Fret

INTRO: F G C F G F

N.C. F G C
Have I got everything? Am I ready to go?
F G
Is it gonna be wild, is it gonna be the best time?
Am F G C
Or am I just saying so-o-o-o? Am I ready to go?
F G C
What do I hear when I say I hear the call of the road?

N.C. Am
I think it started with driving
F G Am G
More speed, more deals, more sky, more wheels
Am F G
More things to leave behind
C
Now it's all in a day for the modern mind
F G C
And I am traveling again

F G Am
Calling this a ghost town and where is the heartland?
F G Am
And I'm afraid, oh, was there any good reason
F G Am F G C
That I had to go, when all I know is, I can never come back, yeah, yeah

F G C
Traveling, I made a friend, he had a trouble in his head
F G
And all he could say, that he knew that the bottle
Am F G C
Drank the woman from his bed, from his bed
F G C
He said, "I'm not gonna lose that way again"

Am
But sober is just like driving
F G Am G
More joy, more dread, someone turns her head
Am F G
And smiles and disappears
C
He's gotta take it like it is and it goes too fast
F G F G Am
And he is just like me, caught in-between, no sage advisor
F
Does weary mean wiser?
Dm Am F
And someday, will I sing the mountains that carried me away
Dm G
Away from home and hometown boys like you

F G C
Yeah, what about us? Was it really that bad?
F G
Oh, its hard to believe I want a highway road-stop
Am F G C
More than all the times we had on little dirt roads
F G C
What am I reaching for, that's better than a hand to hold?

N.C. Am
It really was about driving
F G Am G
Not fame, not wealth, not driving away from myself
Am F G
It's just myself drove away from me
C
And now I gotta get it back and it goes so fast
F G C
So I am traveling again

F G Am
Sitting at the All-Night, picking up a pen
F G Am
And I'm afraid, oh, was there any good reason
F G Am F C
That I had to go, when all I know is, I am all alone again

F G Am
You are the ghost town, and I am the heartland
F G Am
And I can say, oh, that's a very good reason that I had to go
F G Am F G
But now all I know, is I can never come back, yeah, yeah
C F G C F-C
And I will never go back
