Dar Williams

The Ocean

by Dar Williams
Dar Williams

Biography:

American singer-songwriter Dar Williams lives at the intersection of pop and folk. She fuses many genres (blues, rock, jazz), resulting in a rather organic sound. She has been making music for over a decade.

Her studio album My Better Self finds Dar at an unequivocally brazen crossroads. Reflecting on American politics, the disillusionment and apathy of youth, and the female experience, Dar makes no apology for her outspoken beliefs.

Her 2008 album, entitled Promised Land.

Dar Williams - The Ocean

CAPO: 2nd Fret

INTRO: F Dm7 Dm G C

F Dm
When I went to your town on the wide open shore
G C F
Oh, I must confess, I was drawn, I was drawn to the ocean
C Dm
I thought it spoke to me, it said,
G Am F
"Look at us, we're not churches, not schools,
G Am F
Not skating ponds, swimming pools,
Dm
And we have lost people, haven't we though?"

G C
Oh, that's what the ocean can know of a body
F G
And that's when I came back to town
Em
This town is a song about you
F G Am F
You don't know how lucky you are
G Am F G
You don't know how much I adore you
Am F G Dm G C
You are the welcoming back from the ocean

Dm
I went back to the ocean today
G C F
With my books and my papers, I went to the rocks by the ocean
C Dm
But the weather changed quickly
G Am F
Oh, the ocean said, "What are you trying to find,
G Am F
I don't care, I'm not kind, I have bludgeoned your sailors,
Dm
I've spat out their keepsakes"

G C
Oh, it's ashes to ashes, but always the ocean
F G
But the ocean can't come to this town
Em
This town is a song about you
F G Am F
You don't know how lucky you are
G Am F G
You don't know how much I adore you
Am F G Dm G C
You are the welcoming back from the ocean

INTERLUDE: F G Am F Dm G C
La la lee la la, le la la le la la la (3x) la

F G
And the ones that can know you so well
Em
Are the ones that can swallow you whole
F G Am F
I have a good and I have an evil
G Am F G
I thought the ocean, the ocean thought nothing
Am F G Dm G C F
You are the welcoming back from the ocean

Am Dm
I didn't go back today
G C F
I wanted to show you that I was more land than water
Am Dm
I went to pick flowers
G Am F
I brought them to you, look at me, look at them
G Am F
With their salt up the stem, but you frowned
Dm
When I smiled and I tried to arrange them

G C
You said, "Let me tell you the song of this town"
F G
You said, "Everything closes at five.
Em
After that, well, you just got the bars."
F G Am F
"You don't know how precious you are
G Am F G
Walking around with your little shoes dangling
Am F G Dm
I am the one who lives with the ocean.
G
"It's where we came from, you know."
Em
"And sometimes I just want to go back.
F G Am F
After a day, we'll drink 'til we're drowning
G Am F G
Walk to the ocean, wade in with our work-boots
Am F G C
Wade in our work-boots, try to finish the job."

F G Am F
"You don't know how precious you are
G Am F G
I am the one who lives with the ocean
Am F Am
You don't know how, I am the one
F G Am Dm
You don't know how, I am the one"

INTERLUDE: (## repeat about 15x - fade to end ##)
F G Am
La la lee la la, le la la le la la la
