Dar Williams

Playing To The Firmament

by Dar Williams
Dar Williams

Biography:

American singer-songwriter Dar Williams lives at the intersection of pop and folk. She fuses many genres (blues, rock, jazz), resulting in a rather organic sound. She has been making music for over a decade.

Her studio album My Better Self finds Dar at an unequivocally brazen crossroads. Reflecting on American politics, the disillusionment and apathy of youth, and the female experience, Dar makes no apology for her outspoken beliefs.

Her 2008 album, entitled Promised Land.

[Verse 1]
G Em
There are kids, lots of kids, who put the law inside a circle
C G D
As they jump, I hope that you will up and down, up and down
G Em
When did you cave into this role that you were cast in
C G D
When did dress-up turn to fashion, throw your gown up and down

[Chorus]
G C
There's always the sky, let it hear what you're saying
G C
For all that you are saying
Em C
And let it take you apart, to the elements of praying
G C
Til we are only playing to the firmament
G C
Til we are only playing to the firmament

[Verse 2]
G Em
In the rain, in the rain, people rush around on cold streets
C G D
Here's a shell to hear their heartbeats very loud, very loud
G Em
Where's the pain, it's only rain, it's only slowing down a work day
C G D
Only singing happy birthday to a crowd, very loud

[Chorus]
G C
There's always the sky, let it hear what you're saying
G C
For all that you are saying
Em C
And let it take you apart, to the elements of praying
G C
Til we are only playing to the firmament
G C
Til we are only playing to the firmament

[Bridge]
Em C
And when did sex get so mean, when did crime get so clean
Em C D
You know I just can't seem to find the soul in this striving
Em C
Why not play to a dream, cause the world is too green
Am D
For all this bad driving

[Verse 3]
G Em
What's the rush, dip your brush into this twilight
C G D
There are leaves upon the skylight, trace your hand, trace your hand
G Em
Mr. Emd, he shot ahead, he shot ahead inside a circle
C G D
On a bad day, who would you kill, take a stand, trace your hand

[Chorus]
G C
There's always the sky, let it hear what you're saying
G C
For all that you are saying
Em C
And let it take you apart, to the elements of praying
G C
Til we are only playing to the firmament
G C
Til we are only playing to the firmament
