Dar Williams

Buzzer

by Dar Williams
Dar Williams

Biography:

American singer-songwriter Dar Williams lives at the intersection of pop and folk. She fuses many genres (blues, rock, jazz), resulting in a rather organic sound. She has been making music for over a decade.

Her studio album My Better Self finds Dar at an unequivocally brazen crossroads. Reflecting on American politics, the disillusionment and apathy of youth, and the female experience, Dar makes no apology for her outspoken beliefs.

Her 2008 album, entitled Promised Land.

Dar Williams - Buzzer

CAPO: 2nd Fret

INTRO: Am

C
Sitting with the Number Eight platter at the restaurant
Am
Four twenty-nine for almost anything I want

Add it up, it's cheaper than the stuff I make myself
E7 Am
I get by, I never needed anybody's help
Em C
And I tore out an ad and they told me that I
Am
Would press the buzzer, would press the buzzer
Em C
At the graduate lab, they were doing some tests
Am
I pressed the buzzer, I pressed the buzzer__

CHORUS:
Dm
Ride the circle off of the highway
G C
Spiral into the driveway
Bb
In the maze of old prefabs
F E7 Am
They'll be waiting at the la-a-e-ab

C
I don't know how everybody makes it through the daily drill
Am
Paint the nails, walk the dog, pay every bill

I'm feeling sorry for this guy that I press to shock
E7 Am
He gets the answers wrong, I have to up the watts
Em C
And he begged me to stop, but they told me to go
Am
I pressed the buzzer, I pressed the buzzer
Em C
So get out of my head, just give me my line
Am
I pressed the buzzer, I pressed the buzzer__

CHORUS:
Dm
Ride the circle off of the highway
G C
Spiral into the driveway
Bb
In the maze of old prefabs
F E7 Am
They'll be waiting at the la-a-e-ab

C
They called me back to the lab to discuss the test
Am
I put my earrings on, found my heels, wore a dress

Right away I knew, it was like I'd failed a quiz
E7 Am
The man said “Do you know what a fascist is?”
Em C
I said, “Yeah, it's when you do things you're not proud of,
Am
But you're scraping by, taking orders from above.”

I get it now, I'm the face, I'm the cause of war
E7 Am
We don't have to blame white-coated men anymore

Em C
When I knew it was wrong, I played it just like a game
Am
I pressed the buzzer, I pressed the buzzer
Em C
Here's your seventy bucks, now everything's changed
Bm
I pressed the buzzer, I pressed the buzzer

** Key Change - Up 2 Semitones **

F#m D
But tell me where are your stocks, would you do this again?
Bm
I press the buzzer
F#m D
And tell me who made your clothes, was it children or men?
Bm
I press the buzzer

CHORUS:
Em
Ride the circle off of the highway
A D
Spiral into the driveway
C
In the maze of old prefabs
Eb A7 Dm
They'll be waiting at the la-a-e-ab
