[INTRO]
Am E Am E

[Verse 1]
Am
Tucson, Arizona
Fmaj7
Rising in the heat like a mirage
Am
Tony keeps his Chevy
Fmaj7
Like a virgin, locked in his garage
C G
He brings it out at midnight
Dm7 Am G
And cruises down the empty boulevards
C G
And he prowls the darkened alleys
Dm7 Am G E
That snake between the city's thirsty yards
Am G F E7 Esus4
The lonely desert skies reflect the anger in his eyes, and it is dawn

[INTERLUDE]
E Am E

[Verse 2]
Am
His father died of drinking
Fmaj7
And left five children, sinking with his mom
Am
His older brother, Bobby
Fmaj7
Never made it back from Vietnam
C G
With high school well behind him
Dm7 Am G
He lives at home and works this shitty job
C G
And he thinks his '60 Chevy
Dm7 Am G E
Is the only true amigo that he's got
Am G F E7 Esus4
His heart is filled with sadness and his soul is like some ugly vacant lot

[INTERLUDE]
E Am E

[Verse 3]
Am
Mary Estelle Hanna
Fmaj7
Came out from Louisiana for the sun
Am
A deal gone bad in Dallas
Fmaj7
Left her burned and broke and on the run
C G
To make the rent and groceries
Dm7 Am G
She takes this job at 3.15 an hour
C G
Serving shots of whiskey
Dm7 Am G E
And tequila in some smoky red-neck bar
Am G F E7 Esus4
And she dreams some day she'll make her way to L.A. and become a movie star

[INTERLUDE]
E Am E

[Verse 4]
Am
Tony saw her working
Fmaj7
He swallowed hard and asked her for a date
Am
Mary laughed and answered,
Fmaj7
"I would, but every night I'm working late"
C G
He said he had some cocaine
Dm7 Am G
That she could have if she'd just ride along
C G
She said, "What the hell, I may as well
Dm7 Am G E
I haven't had no fun in so damn long"
Am G
He picked her up at closing time
F E7 Esus4
They pulled out on the road and they were gone

[Instrumental]
E Am E Am E Am E

[Verse 5]
Am
Tony's mom got frantic
Fmaj7
When she found her son had not come home
Am
Mary's roommate panicked
Fmaj7
And called the sheriff from a public phone
G
They asked her lots of questions
Dm7 Am G
She tried her best to tell them what she saw
C G
And late that night they found poor Mary
Dm7 Am G E
Lying in some narrow, dusty draw
Am G F E E7
The coroner reported, that she hadn't been deceased for very long

[INTERLUDE]
E Am E

[Verse 6]
Am
Two weeks on they found it
Fmaj7
Buried to the windshield in the sand
Am
There inside lay Tony
Fmaj7
With a small revolver in his hand
C G
The papers simply stated
Dm7 Am G
It must have been the drugs that drove him mad
C G
The neighbours speculated
Dm7 C G E
What could make a good boy go so bad
Am G
Well, it might have been the desert heat
F E7 Esus4
It might have been the home he never had

[OUTRO]
