Damien Dempsey

Go To Sea No More

by Damien Dempsey
Damien Dempsey

Biography:

Damien Dempsey (born 1975 in Donaghmede, Dublin) is an Irish singer and songwriter who mixes traditional Irish folk with contemporary lyrics to deliver social commentary on the positive and negative aspects arising from Ireland's Celtic Tiger society. He sings in English, and to a lesser extent in Irish.

Dempsey's earliest musical influences were the post-pub singsongs that his parents used to have at their home when he was a toddler. Good, bad or indifferent, everyone had to sing.

When first I landed in Liverpool, I went upon a spree

Me money alas I spent it fast, I got drunk as drunk could be

And when that me money was all gone, it was then that I wanted more

But a man must be blind for to make up his mind to go to sea once more

[Chorus]

Once more, boys, once more, go to sea once more
Em Em D Em C D Em*
But a man must be blind for to make up his mind to go to sea once more

[Verse 2]
Em D C D Em*
I spent the night with Angeline, too drunk to roll in bed

Me watch was new and me money too, in the morning with them she had fled

And as I walked the streets about, the whores they all did call

Ah there goes Jack Spratt, the poor sailorlad, he must go to sea once more

Once more, boys, once more, go to sea once more

Ah there goes Jack Spratt, the poor sailorlad, he must go to sea once more

Em D C D Em*
And as I walked the streets about, I met with the Rapper Brown
Em Em G D Em*
I asked him for to take me on and he looked at me with a frown

He says last time you was paid off and with me you could not score

He shipped me on board of a whaling ship bound for the arctic seas

Where the cold winds blow through the frost and the snow and Jamaica rum it would freeze
