Cowboy Junkies

To Love Is To Bury

by Cowboy Junkies
Cowboy Junkies

Biography:

Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alt-country band formed by three siblings from the Timmins entertainment family (Margo Timmins, vocals; Michael Timmins, songwriter & guitars; Peter Timmins, drums) plus Alan Anton on bass. The group formed in Toronto in 1986. The band's name was simply a random choice as they approached their first ever gig, but it has come to perfectly represent their sound. (Some sources may credit Townes Van Zandt's song "Cowboy Junkies Lament" as the source of the band's name

INTRO:

G Am C G 2x Then
D Am C G Bm C G C G

G Am
I buried him down by the river
C G
'Cause thats where he liked to be.
G Am
And every night when the moon is high
C G
I go there and weep openly.

D Am
He and I were married
C G
By the river 'neath this willow tree
Bm Am
And with God and friends witnessing on
Am C G
He pledged his life to me

G Am C G
To me he was earth, I rooted in his soil.
G Am
I to he was sky vast and free
C G
Of the burdens from which he toiled.

D Am
Then one night a terrible fight
C G
Words spoken better left unsaid.
Bm Am
With his wedding vows ringing in my ears
C G
He gave his life to me.

BREAK: G Am C G 2x D Am C G Bm C G C G

G Am
They say to love is to bury
C G
Those demons from which we all hide,
D Bm
But tonight by this river 'neath this willow tree
Bm Am G
Becoming one are earth and sky.
